Laptop Prices of 2008

Does anyone have a good estimate of what a really good laptop would cost in 2008, and what kind of features could it have?

Are you serious?

Yeah

I say a good laptop, which costs about 2,000 today, will cost around 2,200-300 in 4 years. May I ask why you are asking about this?

Is that 220-300, or 2,200-300?
I just bought a new one, and wanted to get a new one in 4 years and was curious. Anyone else have a prediction?

That was 2,200 - 2,300. Damn inflation.

Its tough to say though. A really good laptop 4 years ago was 3000-4000. We've seen a significant decrease in PC prices, largely due to competition and a weak seller's market (think how weak the stock market/consumer economy were for 01, 02 and 03).

I'd say it can go one of two ways. The way Ender said, in which the price will stay relatively the same and only go up a few hundred relative to inflation.

But it could go another way - that is the price could drop significantly - especially if we see more and more companies like those selling the "no brand" computers popping up and actually grabbing a market share. Other factors that could drop the price are more competition in the chip market, as well is in the GPU and chasis, LCD, and HD markets.

Right now its very easy to find quality no-name RAM. But it is much more difficult to find say a Processor, GPU, chasis, or HD.

So the answer is;

the one that you bought right now for 2000 might be worth 200 in 4 years... seriously, the prices should be very similar, it depends on the class of notebook youre buying, i.e. if youre buying the 2008 equivalent to the Sager 8790 expect to pay uber-moolah like you would now for the 8790, while something like a 2008 CL56 would be reasonably priced like it is now. if anything they would be less, just compare the prices of 2000 to those of 2004 and youll get what i mean.

Ok... Thanks.
Does anyone have like a graph of average prices over the past few years, or am I just being crazy? I was looking for one on google, but I only got laptop pictures.

Well, there will probably be systems with 10GHz dual processor chips, 64 pipeline GPUs with 2 gigs of vram, 20,000rpm 500G hard drives, ZXGA++++ screens, and they will weigh less than 5 lbs, last a whole day on batteries, and stay cool even when gaming. Maybe not that advanced in just 4 years, just a guess

and as with all technology, the same thing gets cheaper over time and new stuff is just as expensive as the old stuff when it came out. Inflation might change stuff, but you'll still pay at least ~3000 for top of the line.

ZXGA++++ screens
Absolutely not happening. Many people know already complain about UXGA resolutions. I doubt resolutions will get much larger. Maybe for like 40" screens or TV screens but it is very unlikely.
post #12 of 65
well there i think you're wrong. resolution will keep increasing but OS's and software will change so that we will be able to see everything, just with greater clarity.
post #13 of 65
Thats possible, but it will get to a point where there will be no noticable difference between a YXGA and a ZXGA. At that point it would be meaningless to make larger resolutions. But now I agree that resolutions could go higher than UXGA .
post #14 of 65
yeah, once resolution goes beyond the perception of the human eye, then things like colors and lighting and shading will be the subject of new technology. supposedly organic screens are in development based on bioluminescence and then there will be 3D holographic displays w00t!

Hey... Anyone know what the 2008 equivalent of an HP 17 inch Widescreen Media center edition laptop with a 2.6-2.8 GHz Processor and 80+ HD?
post #16 of 65
multiply the specs by 5 or 10 and you should be able to figure it out pretty soon.
post #17 of 65
Uhh... no since its 2004. But it would be better :O.

Are you saving up?

In 2008, a laptop will just be a paper-thin flexible sheet OLED touch screen with the processor built into the screen.

post #19 of 65
well let me check my crystal ball lol. Honeslty it's anyone's guess, four years is a looooong time in the technology world, so it's safe to say whatever we guess will be in existence in 2008 will be wrong. But we can still guess

I'd say that there will no longer be "mobile" laptops and "dtr" laptops, technology will be such that all laptops will have power and battery life and won't weigh a lot. And I also venture to say that desktops will become obsolete as well, since the gap bewteen the performance of a laptop and a desktop is steadily decreasing.

They've gotta do something about input though. The keyboard is a HUGE factor on the size of laptops, and if they get really small a keyboard will have to be repalced by something else. Voice recognition ?
