I got my 4750 Today!!! - Page 3

Heat - AMD 4750 -vs- 8790

Two different machines and two different setups.

Now for those AMD lovers, I heard that the AMD was a lot cooler than the Intel P4's. That should be the case in normal (non-tasking) operations; however, simply isn't so for extreem applications.

The critical temperatures and how the temps are monitored on these configurations is different.

The 8790 may be cooler (47C) than the 4750, however, the external temperatures may (or may not) be. By external temperatures, I mean, the temperature of the Keyboard, left hand side palm rests, the exhaust, the DVD drive, the x-in-1 readers, and the like. All of these attributes may be "cooler"; however, the temperatures reported could be higher.

It's too bad that someone with both machines couldn't let everyone know what the "exteral temperatures" are - or at least the difference on how they feel.

yup thas a great thing
im just worried because i usually leave my cpu on all the time and thinkin i'll probably be doing that with my laptop too..its a dtr right? so yea..the heat may be a problem for thhat so i dont know what i should do

Do you have any pictures laziepop01 of your laptop?
do you think they could get the 4750 to fit in the 8790 chassis?

As soon as I figure out a way to get some pics up I definately will. My nice digital camera is currently broke, so I'll see what I can do.

Layzie,

What values do you get under the ACPI TEMPERATURE tab from MOBILE METER.

Mine are >
Critical temperature > 155 C
Passive Cooling temperature > 84.5 C
Active Cooling temperature > 70.0 C

Thx

Ditto. Same exact numbers. Why do ya ask?

Just OC'd my video card to 551.74Mhz Core x 275.87Mhz Memory.
Successfully ran 3DMark01 with no artifacts and a new score of 14,551!

i thought if u OC you blow the warrenty?
Lazy - what was the temp gauge hitting when you OC'd?

MobileMeter doesn't give GPU temp (as far as I know), but the CPU temp hit just a little above 70C.
Because, 155 c seems too high to me.

I thought the cpu shuts itself off when it hits 85-90 C .

AMD also confirmed 85-90 C .
Doesn't make sense

Anyways, thx

Will you keep your laptop overclocked ?

Is 70 C your normal temperature or temperature while gaming ?

I read that post about someones 5690...I can only say my 5690 Oc'ed to 520/312 after five hours gaming in Far cry full settings highest detail...hit a max of 55c...Don't get me wrong im considering this machine myself...but the CPU is not the only thing affected by heat...and high temps over a long period of time can lead to premature hardware failures.. I can sit it on my desk and never touch the unit itself since i use wireless keybaord and mouse...so actually feeling the heat doesn't bother me..its what it might be doing to the laptop itself that makes me a little leery. But this is what this forum is for..to discuss the up and downsides to a product before we purchase it.. Thats why i love it here..a whole wealth of information and personally experiences from the people that actually owns the units..

Did you install POWERNOW from AMD? Maybe it helps. Maybe the new bios changes temps.

How's the screen on this bad boy.

The 8790 has no heat issues? Could've fooled me, but hey- what do I know?

Redesign the chassis? I would imagine more than just a little time and energy's been put into that. If it were easy, we'd all just make our own laptops.
Just think- regular desktops with lots of airspace and huge cooling solutions still get on the warm side. Have to expect as much when you cram your CPU into a crowded space w/ no benefits like the desktop has.

And 70C? And here I thought the AMD was supposed to be a lot cooler than the P4s. I'm an AMD man, but I'm currently running at 46C. Even though I consider that high, I'd much prefer that to 70C. I get 60C max during gaming.

I was wondering the same thing.. I thought the A64 run cooler than the equivalent P4...
does anybody have amd cool and quiet installed?
Mayaman2,

So far I know ( could be wrong ) the AMD COOL n Quiet software only works with ATHLON 64 " Desktops" .
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...1_9706,00.html

The ATHLON 64 3000+ DTR is a desktop replacement though .
It might work .....
