Vid cards

I have purchased a new HPzv5260us. I wanted an AMD 64 processor, so that left with an eMachine or HP. This lappy has an Nvidia Geforce4 440 Go 64MB video card. I have now been told that it is not DirectX 9 compatible. Is this true? Will a new driver make it compatible? Is it upgradeable? Does upgrading mean that I would have to have HP do it? It's a great laptop except for the Video card. Just wondering if I should exchange it for a different one. Problem is I have to go to a P4 to get better graphics. Any thoughts or suggestions anyone would like to share about my questions or about AMD 64 vs. P4 would be appreciated. Thanx.

Most probably not upgradable.

The radeon 9600 64mb on the eMachines laptop you were looking at is a very nice video card for a laptop. I would exchange the HP for the emachine if I were you. the mobile athlon 64 is a great processor.

The geforce mx is not even directx8 compatible. The fact that it is called a geforce4 is strange, considering it doesnt have geforce3 capabilities.

Don't be fooled by the name Emachine. Its now owned by gateway and the Emachine actually has the same chasis as one of the voodoo machines. Its suppose to be a pretty solid laptop... and that hp's card is way way outdated..

eMachines chassis is more prone to ing at the hinges. Just something to note.

geforce4 mx is based on the geforce 2 chipset (while the 3mx is actually based off the 3). It's too old to run anything now at even the lowest settings, so going with the 9600 is a much more solid choice.

I called Hp and the card is DirectX 8.1 compliant. Tech support says it is upgradeable, but I would have to have it done at an authorized service center. I'm not real sure if I trust that because it is apparent that they have farmed out their tech support. It was obvious that she was simply reading from a script. I really like the HP except for the video card. I hated the fact that the eMachines has a hinge cracking problem, which was the main reason why I was looking at the HP. That and the fact I have a circuit city charge account and business discount card. Any thoughts on the Intel P4 vs. AMD 64 debate? I saw a lot of nice P4 models. Thanx again.

I think the AMD 64 Mobile is much better with the battery than the P4s. tomshardware has got a neat analysis complete with benchmarks etal.

You are out of luck. the new games that require dx9 will simply not run on that card. Even if the newer games are dx8 compatible they will not run every well.

If you decide to go with the emachines, you will not be dissapointed. It is a great laptop, I used to have one before i decided a laptop with 15.4 widesceen is too big for me to carry around. This whole deal about cracked hindges... mine were never cracked and if they do it is cosmetic. Fill it with epoxy and it will be fine.
