Can't install the 6200 drivers on my 8886!! (nightshade?)

Thread Starter
I downloaded the file "wxp-w2k-radeon-6-13-10-6200.exe" from the ATI site. When I get partway through the install, it tells me it can't find the .inf file and that I should start up w/ VGA drivers and try again... Am I gonna have to completely delete my current drivers to do that? That freaks me out... Will I get better performance w/ these newer drivers or should I just stick w/ the 6178s that came preloaded?

Nightshade?

The catalyst drivers need to be hacked to run them on mobile cards unless you get lucky and choose a card where it will work (as nightshade did in his if I'm not mistaken). ATI does not support mobile graphics with drivers (no one supports mobile graphics except the laptop manufacturer, at least not officially). Many people use hacked drivers or generic ones like plutonium. Nightshade can give info on the sager with this, my experience is limited to other lappies.

"ATI Chips in Laptops and Notebooks

NOTE - Display drivers and multimedia applications for Laptops and Notebooks are NOT available for download from ATI Customer Service.

The display driver supplied with a given laptop or notebook has been customized for:

the built-in flat panel display
any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer.
As a result of these modifications, ATI Customer Service is unable to offer "generic" drivers for laptops and notebooks.

We strongly recommend that you:
use the driver supplied with your laptop or notebook computer, or,
obtain a driver update from the manufacturer of your laptop or notebook computer.

Support for a specific driver feature (such as hardware acceleration of OpenGL) may be incorporated into a particular display driver (or not) at the discretion of the laptop or notebook manufacturer. If you have any questions regarding the features or functionality of a particular display driver, please consult with your laptop or notebook manufacturer."

Source: ATI site

BUT, people still use them cuz they still work sometimes... But you won't find mobile cards listed in there anywhere. Nightshade selected one that happened to still work for the M9. If only I could be so lucky with my M7 :-)

The basic Cat 6200 work WITHOUT BEING HACKED, as I said before.

Extract the files to a location on your HD (if you have winzip installed all you need to do is right click drag the file and chose extract to blah.

Then go into device manager and update the driver for the card by directing the update location to there.

No, wait, you have the wrong drivers, those are actually the 6200C which dont support the M9.

There are some others around, mine were labeled - radeon_7.79b2_9x_xp

Well, like I said, technically none of the drivers released from ATI will "support" the mobile cards. They might "work" with them, lol. But if you uninstall your current drivers and try to install the catalyst drivers on a lappy, it won't recognize your card (because it's not supported). It is awesome that NS got one of them to actually work without being hacked. :-) I will definitely have to try that when I get a sager (counting the days... more like months... blah.)
um...... no, you dont seem to follow me, the card IS supported.

Here is a SS of the Driver in action without ANY modifications....

It was the 6200C I had to force but I changed back to this as I thought it was smarter to use a supported driver as the other one didnt give any increases in anything.

As I said, try and find the other ones, they are around, ill have a look for a link tommorow.

I'm not trying to contradict you. I do follow you. Here's a quote from you on another forum:

"The latest Catalyst drivers support the Mobility 9000 and the new DX9 Cat drivers dont, but if you select the Second Radeon 9000 it says its wrong but it works anyway and slighly better too.

NS"

As you said, it says it's WRONG but it works anyway. Of course the driver list has the card in it, but that's the basis for OEMs and lappy manufacturers to set the driver for their particular setup, as I quoted from ATI's site. ATI has to provide something in the drivers for that card so Dell, Sager, etc can build their driver to support their card. If you just want to call that "supported", then that's fine. I merely say it isn't because ATI themselves say it isn't. I have a feeling the DX9 ones don't have the M9 base in them because the M9 does not have DX9 hardware support (just as the M7 does not have DX8 support). Keep up the great work with drivers though, and I wish you luck in finding a link for the good people here who are looking for one. Here is the link straight from ATI's site:

http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver...e&cmdNext=Next

That is for WindowsXP. Also, that link is for the 6200C driver. Nightshade might post up a link to the 6200 drivers. And actually, ATI just updated their website and if you chose "Mobility" from the list of cards in the driver section it brings up that same quote I posted up here earlier about the mobile cards not being supported in a generic driver (ie: catalyst) from them.

Right, let me clear this up......

There are two sets of drivers, both labeled 6200.

One is the 6200, and the other is the 6200C.

The latest Driver from ATi is the 6200C version, which does NOT support the M9 (but it does support non-mobile cards that dont support DX9 features). Thats where I was refering to installing the wrong card as it would still work (although not better as I originally thought, it had just differnt quality settings).

The 6200 will install and work just like the drivers you get with your laptop on the driver disc as they are fully supported, I dont give a **** who says what, the M9 is one of the supported devices for that driver, and thats that.

As you wish. As I said, you can call it supporting. Out of curiosity, though, does it actually say Radeon Mobility 9000 in the list anywhere? Or did you just use the .inf file and updated it from the device manager? Thanks.
Here is a link to a bunch of drivers:

http://www.rageunderground.com/drivers.shtml

NS, is that one the 6200? The one on top? Judging by the date I can't tell. Actually looks like the C, although it's labeled otherwise. Blah. Lemme know if you check.
I think the zip is just the files without the installer (so you have to update via device manager) but the Mobility Radeon 9000 is already in there (listed, so it is installed automaticaly if you point the updater there) therefore meaning its a supported card in that driver set.

I found the radeon_7.79b2_9x_xp.rar

http://www.hardsite.dk/

where they have a list of mirrors that you can cut and paste. I don't know if the new one you found has the right drivers in it, as I can't get it to install on my system ( I will try again ).

I tried again ( after NightShades next message ) and no go, but the link I gave above is the right one. The radeon_7.79b2_9x_xp.rar unrared and the setup installed it with only the requisite not a signed driver message. In my default resolution and bpp it give me almost 200 more points on my 3dmark2k1, not bad.

Unzip the folder somewhere.

Open device manager.
Go to properties of the Radeon
Click update driver
go into the folder then >> DRIVER >> 2KXP_INF >>
and click the inf.
It should install.
if it cant find some files they are in the folder named BIN.

Excellent :-) I will put that to good use when I get a sager, lol. Especially considering NS's benchmarks tear up :-)
Hmmm... Going all the way down to 800x600-16bpp gives me a 3dmark2k1 of 8808...
Lol, yeah, lower resolution and 16 bit color will really up the performance. :-) Nice to see it almost reach 9000 :-) WHOA.
I'm thinking this should go into a new thread (this one is getting too long), but I'll ask anyway:

In the screen shot provided, it shows the drivers as being dated 12/10/2002. Since Dec. 10th isn't even here yet, that must mean the Oct. 12, 2002 version, correct?

The latest drivers posted to the various download sites listed previously show a Nov. 14, 2002 date.

Please verify the following:
  • Nov. 14, 2002 == 6200C
  • Oct. 12, 2002 == 6200
  • Best functioning driver version for M9 == 6200
If true, where do we find the 'older' Oct. 12 driver version?

Thanks for helping to clear this up! My head is really starting to hurt with this one...

It is the older one, but im not positive on the date and I cant find them, but when I get home from work later I will upload them to my site for everyone.

The score is Supposed to be on defaults, I could easily brake 9k on lower res etc, but use defaults, its all anyone cares about.

NS
lol, agreed, whenever anyone runs benchmarks for comparison it's always "3dmark defaults" as NS said. It would be great to have the older ones posted somewhere where we could download them :-) Thanks a ton for the offer NS!
