The Official AMD64 Mobility Alienware Laptop Thread - Page 6

I've been in the market for a laptop for a few months now. I have decided to go with AMD over the Intel chips. Though finding a good AMD laptop isn't easy. I finally found a hypersonic AMD laptop with everthing I want, then I heard about the new Alienware AMD notebook. Currently I am waiting to see what the Alienware notebook will offer. Once the release more details I will be picking up either the hypersonic or the alienware.

Why the Hypersonic?
The Aviator AX7 is the same thing as the Sager4750, and the Sager is cheaper by quite a bit.

I only want a 15 inch book and Sager doesn't offer one. I am actually looking at the AX6, it comes with everything the AX7 does but is smaller, which equates to longer battery life. Also I have heard that Sager notebooks tend to break physically.

The AX6 is a Mitac8355 which can be found much cheaper elsewhere.
Check out the Notebook General section.

I think that the Aurora-m is rather ugly possibly even boardering on fugly, but hey, whatever floats your boat. As far as the chassis is concerned, Alienware should have stuck with the 766 model uniwill, imho.

The other reason they changed the chassis may be that they wanted to clearly distinguish between the 51m, and the Aurora-m. If they both looked the same, then people might have been having to ask if someone's was a 51 or an aurora, and that wouldn't be good now would it. Alienware may have wanted to do this more for marketing, and sales, than for the true style(looks) of the laptop.

Then again I may just be full of it, you never know.......

So is there any details yet on price and upgrades? Damn it, I wish Alienware would hurry up.
Upgrade *to* an Aurora? Ha! I doubt it.

new mobo, processor, video, not to mention the chassis is different....

I meant options, not upgrades.

I've been told by someone at AW that we should see the Aurora64-m within the next few weeks(very vague) but that we should expect a 3 week lead time on it!!!(Not so vague)
As I said earlier, not gonna see it before September. Even that might be generous at this rate.
I talked to an AW rep today, and they basically said that they have little information on it, that it should be out in 1-2 months, probably after or late september. So, its not coming too soon..... Also, I asked about an ALX-M, and he said he heard rumors, and that he wasn't sure if there was such a thing, but even withing AW, he has heard people talking about it........

Imagine an ALX-M, that would be so

One last thing, I asked how is the performance compared to the Area 51-m, (because even tho its not being sold yet, they must have seen a working prototype) and he told me he saw a test prototype and said its faster than the Area 51-M!!!
It needs to make it out in time for Xmas.
the look...you forget the look... what if it is ugler than area 51 ... that would be a shame since AW all about good looking
post #114 of 192
There will never be an ALX-m, the ALX line uses watercooling, dual processors and dual video cards, all of which are impossible on a notebook unless you want a 5 inch thick 15 pound notebook.

A 5 inch thick, 15 pound notebook is still smaller, lighter, and more portable than a desktop + monitor. Bring it on!

...even if the thing was 30 pounds i doubt they would put watercooling in a notebook. But 2 graphics cards seem possible, as long as you can deal with 32 seconds of battery life.

Notebooks have batteries?

hey, i thought this might whet you appetites about the aurora64-m that due to release soon. i emailed alienware.co.uk awhile ago and receieved the following reply today (excerpt):

Hi,

Thank you for your enquiry about Alienware Computers.

The Aurora-64m should be available very soon, by the end of August or
early September. At present the configuration will not include the
MR9800. It will come with an integrated Radeon Mobility 9700. The
Aurora-64m, like all AMD based systems at present, does not support
PCI-X. We are releasing an 8 x DVD +/- RW for mobile systems within
the coming weeks and the Aurora-64m will most likely include this
shortly after launch.

Above is all the information I know for certain at present. However,
I assure you Alienware will carry the MR9800 very soon as it is the
top spec Video Card available on the market and Alienware prides
itself on offering the top spec products to our customers.
Unfortunately, at present, there is no solid information on possible
launch dates so it is difficult to give you a timeframe but it will
happen soon.

I hope I have answered your queries and if you have any further
queries please don't hesitate to contact us.

Most of the info above is probably nothing new (i haven't read all the posts in this thread ) but i hope it helps

if it does come down to a 64 bit processor with an integrated ati 9700 or a P4 with an mr9800 i know what side of the line i stand on

whats everybody else's thoughts on this? 64bit with 9700 or P4 with mr9800?

ps: i heard people expressing their fears that the aurora 64 bit would not have the ability to upgrade the graphics card. above the guy typed integrated. maybe that answers the question ...
Confirms my belief that there will be no gpu upgrades for aurora-m. Add that to it's somewhat, er, unique styling, and you better hope they offer it at a really good price if it's gonna sell like the Area-51m.
what good is going 64 with a now standard high end graphics card (9700)? your right about the price. if its more than the area51-m it won't sell , especially if the area51-m comes out with the mr9800 and the fact that it'll probably be updateable in the future
