edit: web browsing/idle battery life = 3.5 hr
gaming battery life = 1.5 hr
All right, gonna jump right into this...
Specs: (built by hypersonic-pc)
Windows 2000 Professional (installed myself, system came with blank HD)
1.7 Ghz Dothan
1 GB RAM (1 stick pc2700, timings = 2.5,3,3,7)
Toshiba DVD writer (model SD-R6372, temporary until Hypersonic-PC ships me the right drive)
60 GB 7200rpm HD
Battery = model BATCL50L rated at 14.8V 4300mAh
internal Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG
Everything else is the same as regular CL56's
Running apps:
AOL instant messenger
Virtual DAEMON manager v3.44 (to mount cd images)
Norton Antivirus corporate edition (school LAN)
Synaptics touchpad driver/software
Logitech mouseware driver/software
Intel Wireless driver/configuration utility
ZoneAlarm pro firewall
EZ button software
ATI taskbar icon (for hotkeys)
Intel Speedstep application
all said and done there are 37 processes running after start-up.
I've set intel speedstep (downloaded off of chemusa's website, win2000 version) to max battery life while I was seeing how long the battery would last yesterday . The power management was set to Portable/Laptop with 5 minutes chosen for each of the three options. Wireless was turned on with power management set to automatic (and transmission power at 100% for ad-hoc, which doesn't matter since i'm on a wireless access point).
I'm getting 3.5 hours while web-browsing/idle (Mozilla Firebird web browser) and maybe 1.5 hours while gaming (Battlefield: Vietnam). I've used Mobile Meter to check my cpu speed while web browsing and gaming, and it's reporting the right speeds for each (600mhz browsing, 1.7ghz gaming). Video card clocks stay at 390 core, 202 mem (powerplay is disabled on cl56 from everything I've read).
Now, what have I done wrong here?
I've used BatteryMon to check my battery life and it's been showing about 4 hours while i'm doing nothing (maybe checking a webpage once every 2 minutes, hardly "normal web surfing"). This is its estimate after using the laptop for about 15-20 minutes, it just goes downhill from there.
Is the fact that I'm running Windows 2000 somehow having this horrible impact on my battery life?
Should I disable certain applications?
Am I missing other power management applications?
edit: Is the screen supposed to dim when running on battery power? Mine barely changes in brightness, and from all the other laptops I've ever seen it's usually a little more insignificant.
Any suggestions/feedback would be appreciated.
