How much faster are raptors? as in loading levels..

I assume that you were going to do a RAID with the 2 Raptors?
If so, I suggest that you try 1 Raptor first.
I intended to use two Raptors on my system, but I tried one first, and it is damned fast. What I decided to do is kind of a combo of your options:
I use one Raptor as my boot drive, that I have Windows, my apps and most of what I use everyday on it, and some data. I also have a 200GB 7200 SATA WD drive in my system that is an extra data drive. I dump all the "projects", etc. to it. I also use it to make backups of the important data on the Raptor.

To answer the last question here: Raptors are substantially faster. They are 10,000 rpm and like 4ms average access.

Maybe one 1 or 2x36gb raptors for windows and doing apps and stuff, and 1x250 for storage, altho 250x2 for storage would be sweet

300GB+ storage should be enough for most people, right?

Damn aamsel beat me to it

the 74gb raptors are awesome, raid or not. I have 2 that I run (non raid) for my OS and games and large files (video, etc.) Plus a 160gb backup drive. just plain awesome. No louder than any other drives.

the older raptors (36gb) are louder, by the way.

oh, i guess I should've read aamsel, did the same. good job.

If you're building just a gaming PC, check out anandtech's RAID-0 review, note the "game loading time" section and the conclusion.

http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2101

If it were me (I wish...) I'd just use 1 x 74GB Raptor for gaming and 1 x 250GB partitioned for everything else. Or spend the extra cash on upgraded components.

EDIT: there were lots of replies while I wrote this, sorry if it's repeated info.

The smaller Raptors are not as fast as the 74GB model.
Yes, they are 10,000 rpm but storagereview.com, etc did not find them nearly as fast as the 74GB model.

Agreed. Use the 74GB models, definitely.

Oh ok, didn't know about the speed difference between the 2 models (haven't really been following computer tech stuff too much lately, a little behind the times )

aamsel best explained it, you should definetly think that route

1 72GB raptor
1 250GB 7200

You could always take more then 2 HD for your raid... 3 times 80 gig S-Ata 8mb are the price of a single Raptor 72... if you're adding a 250 gig on top a 4 hard drive setting is a bargain... it probably would be close in speed ( if not faster... ) and you would have a lot of space availabe, and a huge buffer...

I love my raptors. Woudn't use anything else. I recommend them wholeheartedly.
