Some info on the SiS650... Can it game?

I am waiting for my Sager 2720s to arrive.

It has the SiS650 card, and i don't do alot of gaming but wanted to play some of course at some point.

Found the following info on this SiS chip. It looks like it should be able to play many games. Any ideas or opinions on this ?

Thanks !

===================

The SiS650 appears to be a higher-end version of the SiS645, a Pentium 4-complaint chip set that was rolled out last month. In addition to having all the functions of the SiS645, the SiS650 integrates 256-bit 2D/3D graphics capabilities on the device.

The new chip set also supports SDRAM and double-data-rate (DDR) SDRAM, including DDR333, DDR266, and PC133 memory. It also has a memory capacity of up to 3-gigabytes, and support the new-generation Pentium 4-compliant 400-MHz front-side bus.

The SiS650 integrates the company's SiS315 graphics core, providing built-in, real 256-bit 3D graphics engine. The chip set also provides up to 2-gigabytes-per-second Ultra-AGPIITM bandwidth. It supports an AGP4X/2X graphics card slot as well. When used with the SiS301B video bridge, it can be hooked up to a second CRT screen, DVI LCD screen or NTSC/PAL-based TV.

Of course it can game! Maybe it won't burn through Doom III at all, but it can handle ALL of the built-in Windows games (minesweeper, pinball, hearts, etc).

It is also quite capable on non-intense (graphically) games like Starcraft, Master of Orion, etc...

But rest assured, you will not be getting incredible FPS scores in first-person shooters.

I've read alot of different things.

That the games I'm interested in (JKII, Castle Wolfenstein, Ghost Recon) will run fine in 1024x768, and then I read some that say they'll drag.

Based on what I've found I'm going to assume that these games will run well, but of course all the big name game coming in the future I'll leave to the desktop.

Just wanted some opinions on this. Hopefully I'll get some from someone who has my model.

Thanks for the reply !

kamino77,

I passed my Compal notebook to my father, and it has a sis650 chip. I can play Grand Theft Auto 3 at the lowest resolution (640x480x16), Motocross Madness 2 at 1024x768, and Mech Warrior 4 at 1024x768. The games ran fine at those screen settings

I'm also a fan of emulators such as MAME, and for the record, all the MAME games run fine, such as the Neo-Geo games, and the Street Fighter series.

You'll be having fun with your laptop!
