USB 2.0 backward compatibility?Stanton Finalscratch?

I am hoping to purchase either a 5660 or maybe even a 8886,however I am kind of stuck due to the lack of USB 2.0 support from Stanton's linux based Finalscratch, which I also intend on purchasing, and is also a large part of why I need a laptop in the first place.(and games and audio apps of course,so the more juice the better)

Stanton't tech support is being of little help to me in this matter, although I have gleaned through their forums that in some cases,so long as the usb 2.0 ports can be seen as usb 1.1 ports by the Finalscratch software(and numerous other variables),it will work.
In general though, the software is very finicky as to which computers it will actually run on,however I am aware of one user who has sucessfully run Finalscratch on a Sager 8880,which came with USB 1.1 ports.
I guess my question is....is there any way in the bios of the 5660 or 8886 to switch the USB ports to 1.1 ports,or does anyone understand the technicalities of backwards compatibilty with USB 2.0 and a stripped down linux kernal that is not built to recognize such?
Even better.....if by some fluke anyone was aware of anyone using finalscratch on a USB 2.0 equiped Sager?
Any feedback greatly appreciated as I really don't want to have to buy a Sony or a Dell!!!

USB 2.0 is supposed to be backwards compatible with USB 1 but i think you have to install it as USB 2 then it will lower speed when it detects a device which is USB 1 compatible. I'm not sure you can use a USB 1 driver... Maybe you can install a generic USB driver on linux that will default to USB 1.
What linux distribution does Finalscratch use? maybe you can install it on some other distribution that already supports USB 2 like Mandrake.
I would suggest you look at the manuals for the system you want to get.

All USB1.1 things will plug in and work fine in USB2 ports. Actually, generic drivers will default the USB ports to 1.1... but, I'm not sure how drivers in linux work so I can't speak much to that. Just know that USB1 things will just run at USB1 speeds on a USB2 port, but they are technically ALWAYS supposed to work.

Yes,intalling it on a full linux installation would probably be the most likely route to take in order to get FS and USB 2.0 working together.
There is a full discussion on this topic at:

This all seems a little over my head, although I do have a friend who eats, sleeps and breathes Linux who could probably give me a hand. It's just that if I can't do it myself,I'd almost rather not.It sucks having to hassle a friend with stupid technical questions all of the time.
I suppose I could always just buy Finalscratch and a Sager, then if FS doesn't work on the Sager right away, run it on my desktop until the appropriate updates/drivers are released.Kind of a hope for the best scenario...sigh!,but I really want a Sager now!!!I'm not really a "buy the second best" kind of guy.If I'm going to spend money,I want to spend it right!

Well, if I may make a statement of my humble opinion... If you are going to spend your money on a lappy, spending it on a sager is prolly the best way (assuming you want a true desktop replacement).

(And if I knew enough about linux, I'd help you without hesitation with the problem you are facing.)
