I always try to keep an open-minded opinion, and I have seen firsthandedly the advantages of other mp3 players in direct comparison to that of the iPod.
However, overalll iPod still remains the best mp3 player currently available to the general public.

Like I mentioned previously, it won't matter if your hard drive holds 60 GB, your player costs $100 less, and it supports every known format to man.....if your player quits working after several months of solid use......that should be a warning sign to any consumer NOT to purchase it.

I still firmly believe the iPod is the BEST mp3 player on the market.....especially for your average Joe.
For anyone else out there looking for something more, go ahead and purchase an iRiver, Rio, or Creative. Just don't freak out when it stops functioning as advertised and the company gives you the run-around in your attempts to get it serviced.
Well, to each his own I guess. You obviously value the advantages of the iPod over the advantages of other players. Hence you think that the iPod is the best. But just keep in mind that to others it may not be so. For me, right now it's a tie between the iPod and the yet-to-be-released iRiver H320. I think each has different advantages, but I cannot decide truly which one is better. You are entirely correct in assessing the build-quality of the iPod compared to some other players. After using the H120 I think iRiver released something that should be still in a testing phase. But even considering that, the H series offers some things that the iPod do not. So I guess "best" is entirely subjective.

First of all, Creative has a good build quality. Among my friends nobody ever had a problem with a Creative product be it a set of speakers, a sound card (i have creative live!) or anything else Creative for that matter. I've heard nothing but the best things from iRiver owners too, meaning there aren't that many problems with iRiver products either. Those companies have good quality control and you are clearly not keeping an open mind and just bashing everything non-apple due to you being an apple fanboy.
Actually, ABF, every single person that have replied to your utterly incompetent posts have discounted them entirely....as they make no sense.

Yeah, I'm an Apple fanboy. But that doesn't prevent me from having bought an iRiver and Creative product in the past (both of which quit on me for no apparent reason).

More than likely I just got unlucky and received one out of a bad shipment of units....hard to tell, but the second you said the iPod was a "wannabe pocket pc", your opinion got shot to hell.

Yes...perhaps I am being a tad too opinionated in all of this.
But I still maintain the iPod is the best player on the market......
In any event, if you do decide to go with an iPod, take a long, hard look at the 3rd generation models.

Oh....I just checked out a website highlighting the upcoming iRiver 320.....the specs do look VERY, VERY tempting

However, whether it is functional or not is just something we'll have to wait on.

Is that real carbon-fiber encasing it....or is it just some faux look?

It's a faux carbon-fiber finish that is harshly criticized. If I decide to get it, I wlll get the alternative version with black reflective finish.

I owned a 3rd gen iPod for a while. But if I am going to get an iPod again I would choose the 4th gen. Even though I like the 3rd gen's controls better, there is not much choice. Apple is not iRiver. Apple doesn't offer firmware updates. Apple forces you to buy a new iPod every year in order to get any update in function whatsoever. Is there any reason that you prefer the 3rd gen over the 4th gen?

Damn it....that is a true shame it's faux, though I figured it would be.

Anyhoo, I love the touch sensitive controls of the 3G and the backlit controls....I know, they are just stupid lil' nuances most people could care less about, but I like them nonetheless.

I'm giving Apple a month or so to give me a firmware update......if they don't do that....they'll be going on my s. list for awhile.

creative has the zen touch in stock at their online store now. Wanna see a review on it

Dustap, you're just discrediting other companies that create either supperior or at least compeditive products to the ipod because you can't keep an open mind. I am quite happy with my Creative LIVE! sound card and would not think twice about buying an Audigy 2 for my next desktop.

Uhhhh....I just said I was rather impressed with the new iRiver.....it's getting kinda' annoying how you keep on saying all this random **** in a futile effort to discredit me.

Agreed!

I realize this is an extremely old thread but I'm debating the Creative Zen touch and the Creative zen micro. It's a matter of space, battery life, looks, and general ease of use/features. Anybody have either or any opinioins to help me?

Get a Archos Gmini 400!!!!!! Thay are the best MP4 players!!!
That Gmini 400 is great. I've been looking for an iPod-sized digital a/v player. If no new players come out this holiday season, that's the player I'd get.
i just got the zen micro. i don't know much about the zen touch, but i know that it's a whole lot bigger.
space: zen touch (20vs5)
battery life: touch lasts longer, but micro is replaceable - i think that's a much bigger deal
looks: micro by far
ease of use/features: micro is newer/more advanced

unless you need 20gb, i would say definitely go with the micro. I only have 6gigs of songs, so it wasnt a tough choice for me. I want the smallest mp3 player i can get.
Well I bought a touch a few months ago, it’s light, very intuitive and has awesome sound quality, my friends who have ipods all said they wish they had got a touch now , in fact one of my mates just shelled out for the new 40 GB version.

The battery life is great and apparently can be raised to 32 hours if wmp files are used instead of mp3. The device supports two way switching between a pc and itself so I also use it as a portable hard drive and put movies on it to take round to my mates.

Theses only two things that let it down, the scroll pad takes a short while to get accustomed to, and the carrying case somehow feels wrong, but then it’s so small I just put it in my pocket anyway.

At the moment i use up 1/4 of the memory for songs, but i often add 1-2 gb extras worth of data which i take from place to place.

To pod or not to pod

"If one had an iPod....why would they ever purchase another mp3 player?"

First off, because it doesn't have a radio. Why on Earth not, it's a huge omission. Second, what about MP4?

So, who can advise someone who DOES want a radio (therefore no iPod) but who also has an Apple notebook?
