Wow, Awesome pictures. Now... Is the CPU in a socket or soldered ? Can i get the celeron "barebone" and stick a 735 in there ? Another thing, did you have to cut any "void warranty if broken" tape? Is the dissasembly traceable by sony incase someone changes out the hardrive and later has a warranty issue ?

Awesome! Thanks

Thanks a lot! Those are really excellent how-to pics. You don't know how many countless strangers you're helping to void their warranty.

Yes.

Anyone who attempts these upgrades should just assume they're voiding the warranty and won't get any service from Sony. I don't know about the stickers.

If you you want to be optimistic and do the work as cleanly as possible, you might be able to chance trying to get service if a problem comes up. You might increase your chances by holding onto the original chip and HD rather than ebaying them. Then you can swap the original components back in before you send it in for service. You could even leave the original virgin system installed on the HD.

Also, I was thinking, it might be a good idea to get the "barebones" machine and use it for a month or so to see if any problems come up in that time. If they do, you can exchange it or get it repaired without worrying. After a month and you're pretty sure you the system doesn't have any basic defects, then you can upgrade.

What you want to do is creat the recovery cd's or dvd before you isntall the new hard drive.....with all the new vaio's sony includes software to make your own recovery cd's (it does it using the data on the hidden recovery partition that is on the sony installed hard drives)....then when you put the new hard drive in, you boot to your recovery cd and install everything back

No, when you boot up the sony for the first time it asks you to create them, and it runs through a sony program that burns the recovery cd's for you......they do this so that THEY dont have to spend the $$$ to include their own recovery cd's in the box

Yeah i neglected to mention that hte same thing happened to me...one the the screwheads came off when i was taking it out...so i am out one screw...but no biggie....to be honest, its MUCH easier than doing the hard drive on an A series vaio...cause the A series has 2x screws.
I would hang on to your hard drive cause it has that sony recovery partition..(unless you already created your recovery burnt discs)
Then you can just sell it.

also, wat are the blue slips or stickers thing i see in the pictures? Is that so sony knows whether or not u opened the notebook in case of warranty? Can u put it back in

besides that it doesnt look like there's anything particular that allows Sony to tell that u voided their warranty. As long as u put the old harddrive back in, i dont think they can tell. Or can they?

i don't know if this is the case with the s series, but with the v505 i had heard people say that sony will send you recovery CD's if you call and ask (for a charge of course -___-;; )

Hello to all.

I have just registered and this is my first post so here goes.

I am considering purchasing the above mentioned laptop in London. The model i was considering was the S1XP and as people have mentioned it has a 4200rpm hard drive. I am currently used to using high performance workstations with 10,000rpm scsi 320mb hard drives and fear that after time I will find the sony's standard hard drive a bit of a pain. Could someone please advise which size hard drive is in the laptop and what hard drive they would recommend I purchase or read reviews on. Links to good pages would be very much appreciated. I think it has a 2in hard drive, but am not sure if that is the case and whether it is a standard, slim or super slim. Are any special skrew drivers required to change the drive over?

It's a standard 2.5" notebook drive. Most people use the Hitachi Travelstar 7K60.

does that have a good review? I heard it spins quite loud and can rattle alot. Maybe they were jsut too picky, not sure.

Thanks for the comment, bloke.

You are not screwed... Sony offers all of the drivers for download at www.sony.com/pcsupport

You can also puchase a recovery cd/dvd from the parts and accesories site linked from pc support. If you download the drivers the only thing you will be missing is the sony proprietary programs, and who really misses those things anyway. OpenMG was the first thing I uninstalled when I got my computer anyway...

Good Luck
