Paint Mod

Now that Spikes paint tutorial is up, how many people are gathering the courage to actually try this?

my biggest concern is voiding the warrenty, but i figure if any particular part breaks down, i can just get that specific part sent to me, so dell never has to know.
I was worried about messing up the actual painting, but i realize that thats not a big deal, as you can sand off whatever you mess up.
The only other thing that sucks, is the actual time its gonna take... deffinetely not a one day thing.

Newayz, i think im gonna do mine in metallic black (with a mirror finish). I might start this weekend

Good luck! My parents would shoot me if I painted my compy...

Note black is the hardest colour to do...
Anyway, may try it over summer break, but for now I'm knuckng down to study for the semester (yeah right...).

mmmmmm..... I would like this also Evo. Just remember tho like Sakor said black is hardest to do. Also the finish in these pictures was achieved by just using a gloss paint, not metallic. Metallic wont have the same mirror finish due to the small metal particles and relies on the clear coat for a smooth finish. The clear coat however is not quite as good as the gloss for this mirror finish however, so if you want true mirror, go gloss.
Cheers

Also note, as Spiike mentioned, for the first couple months the paint will be 'soft'. Fingerprint indentations and such will show up more particularly on a Gloss finish, so you would have to buff and polish it a lot. A gloss finish will be very high maintenance to keep looking good...

If you've never painted something like this before I would not recommend gloss black by any means. The smallest mistake will show up like a sore thumb. You need to remember, the guy that did that black paint job in those pics have painting experience. I emailed the guy a couple times, and he knows his stuff. Fingerprints wont appear on the surface in the first couple months. More like swirl marks, chipping, paint lifting from the primer... much worse than fingerprints. Fingerprints might tarnish the finish a day or so after the paint has dried. I also would not recommend metal flakes because it wont give a mirror finish. The only way I got mine was by applying many many coats of clear coat. Just an fyi for those that might attempt the painting

i think your crazy to want to paint it in the first place. Dont do it dude. Rethink what your doing to that poor computer,

lol. Too late for Spiike though, but it looks fantastic! Really so long as you do it to "spare" chassis pieces then if you **** it up you haven't lost the whole laptop, just that part and the money it cost, which is really not that much.

Actually I have another d800 lcd cover and base along with all my original 8600 parts.. so i might undertake that black paint... dunno what to do with those. Maybe just sell the extra d800 parts on ebay.
spiike, would you recommend buying extra covers on ebay (is that where you got them?), doing the paint job on those, and then letting them sit somewhere in a safe, cool, dry place for 3 months while the paint cures? or should you keep an eye on the paint as it's curing?

great job on yours, btw!

I got all my parts from ebay.
If you're going to keep your laptop at your desk then go ahead and put the parts back together after a week of drying, and just be careful. Then polish every once in awhile. After 3 months apply wax. If you're going to transport your laptop frequently let the parts dry in the sun for another week and just be a lil more careful.

i was thinking about doing all of it in august and letting it sit somewhere at home while im up at school, until around thanksgiving, and then putting the painted parts on then. are there any downsides to letting the paint cure unattended?

Evo,

ergh ....is it really that hard? his tutorial sounded a little easier than urs spike (probably b/c he did a lot less coats), but it certainly doesnt seem any more complicated.

Yi Chen, goto the Mod sticky, its a link in Spikes paint mod post.

alright, now that you bastards got me doubting myself, i think im gonna go ebay for a new chassis (if i can afford it), so i can do this thing without any worries. And if it does come out good, put it on.

help

just checked ebay, and saw no 8600 or d800 casing. Does anyone know where i could get one? or how often these cases happen to come up on ebay. Also, about how much are they.... im quite poor right now

There are plenty on ebay, check some powersellers. You can't often get a whole shell, but you can pick up all the various parts separtely very easily.

I plan on taking my dell inspiron 5100 (POS) apart this week and start painting and adding led's as soon as this weekend. I cant wait to see my finished product.

evo, for finding them on ebay, start here: http://listings.ebay.com/Laptop-Part...emListQQsotrZ2

as for me, before i make a big mistake.... the 600m cover/chassis/etc is compatible with the d600, right (just as the i8600 is compatible with d800)?
