Dad looking for student laptop - Page 2

Dell would be my first choice for someone who can't be their own tech support, but this system might work: http://store.myaopen.com/1557gl.html You can get that down to a good price with some minor cut backs.

Dell is not currently my first choice for anything.
If you are getting a Dell, I would recommend a 1+ year old model used.
My son has a 1 1/2 year old Inspiron 8200, and it is super-solid, really, really nice screen.
The new Dells are not nearly as well made, and I haven't seen a screen that I liked on any Dell I have seen this year. This includes the high dollar Precision M60. I just saw a brand new one, second one I have seen at work, and I was very unimpressed with the quality and the screen and keyboard.
Hopefully Dell will improve their notebook product line soon.
My guess is that they will.

You are a good man. My Dad would never buy me a laptop. He might however offer me some humiliating job of coming over to his house to be his slave labor all summer until I had enough to buy it myself. At any rate, the Centrino has less heat and more battery power and is lighter for carrying. Plus you can get a cl56 compal for a good price.

Hard work builds character. Your dad shouldn't have to shell out 1500 bucks for you to have a gaming computer for school. Unless you're an engineer and need to run CAD programs and stuff, you really don't need the power.

Slave labor implies that you don't get paid. If you're working to get a laptop, that's hardly slave labor. What you're suggesting is that you father work to earn the money to buy you a laptop while you do nothing. Sounds like you want your father to be the slave labor.

Maybe I'm just grumpy today but keep in mind, that your father isn't "a good man" just because he believes that you should earn (at least in part) your toys. How many lawns would you have to mow to get $1500? Maybe you should start mowing the neighbor's lawns to earn the laptop money. Be sure to do your dad's for free since you'll probably be using his lawnmower and gas.

Unless your father makes ALOT of money or is independantly wealthy, he has alot of bills to pay and $1500 after tax money is about $2000 of his salary. Aside from bills, there's retirement to think about so that he's not a burden to you when he's old, probably your college and any siblings you might have would need to be provided for, family vacations, unexpected emergencies like hospital bills, home repairs, etc.

If you haven't thanked your parents in a while for doing so much for you on a daily basis, you should.

Sorry for going off on you.

eMachines
It's in your price range with rebates and it's the best bang for the buck machine out there right now.
