8887 can't get windows updates

8887 and my desktop pc were working fine until on ebay and suddenly a rash of norton anti-virus red virus alert dialogs came up on the pc (don't remember if the 8887 was even on at that moment), saying 'trojan horse', til I finally just rebooted to stop the dialogs. I did a full NAV scan of both and found nothing. Then, everything was fine, except I could not browse to ebay any more! Any place else I could go, just not ebay. Both machines are winXP pro. I finally did a non-destructive reinstall of win xp on the pc, and everything was fine again. Tried doing the same on the 8887, no go, the process hung up. So I got a tech guy from the local college to help me with a full partition reinstall on the 8887, and everything fine except for one thing: I can't do a windows update. I go there, then hit 'scan for updates' and nothing happens for about 3 minutes, then I get an error message. I've tried getting help from a ms public NG, and I just get some gobbledegook about going into the registry and making some changes, something I really don't think I should have to do with a freshly installed XP pro. Anyway, I did try one regedit suggestion, and lo, I could now get through 'scan for updates' (though slowly), but could not choose to download any of the 45 items shown there. By the way, I do have a wireless network and router, never open email attachments unless expected/from someone I know, run outlook express in text only mode, etc, so I don't know how/why I got hit in the first place. Is there some way I can get winxp pro cleanly reinstalled so I can start fresh, get all my win updates, hide behind my router's firewall, and be happy again?

Try this. Go to \WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and delete Update Class. And try Windows Update again.

There's only one file in windows\downloaded program files, and that is ActiveDataInfo Class -- delete it?
Don't know what program it goes to so I would not delete it since it may be needed. Are you allowing signed Active-X Controls to download ?

Yes, with prompt. Now, I'm having a further problem; this time it's with InterVideo DVD4, which came with the 8887 when I bought it. It always worked before, now when you try to play a dvd it says "Create overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again."

All this **stuff** after doing a full reinstall of winxp pro... maybe I'll just send it out to sager (though it's past warranty) and let them sort it out, clean everything out and reinstall win xp pro again and don't send it back to me until they are able to get win update and DVD4, both of which used to work just fine, to work again. (However, I did talk to a sager tech on the phone about the win update, and he suggested to run without it...

What if something else that used to work on this machine no longer will work, even after sager does their thing..

Is it possible for a machine to get so buggered up that no one can fix it?! Seems like a silly question, but I'm wondering...

If you did a FULL reinstall of WinXP (with an HDD format) then all of your other software will have to be reinstalled and should work afterwards. If you did a partial, "repair", reinstall of WinXP, you may have overlayed some critical files for other software anyway, and the other software will need to be removed and reinstalled.

I recently did a FULL, format HDD, (re) install of WinXP on my 8887 (1st in a year and a half of ownership), along with a (re)install of everything else afterwards, and everything runs fine. I followed the 8887 manual and reinstalled all the basics in the order suggested, then reinstalled everything else I wanted. There is nothing, IMO, that a format HDD and fresh install won't cure. Yeah, it's a pain and you don't want to do it often, but it was darn well worth it for me.

REF accessing Windows Updates, make sure your security settings are low enough in I.E. Good luck!

That's it! What you said got me thinking about the manual and then installing all the drivers--of course, I'd done that, too, but I reinstalled --again-- the video driver per the manual from the cd that came with the computer, and the winDVD4 problem went away! Thanks!

Still can't do windows update, but I reset my ie security to high, and I have router firewall and NAV, so I guess I'll be OK!

You should do a full reinstall. I thought i did one before but didn't and had to do it again. Make sure it is a FULL reinstall and all will be fine.

I guess it's time for all the 8887's to die... Help

HD Degraded, trying full reinstall on new HDD. Nice Manuals LOL.

My 8887 ran beautifully for 2.7 years, Now that I need to do reinstall, realized that I never got any drivers with the laptop. Did everyone else get them on Disk? I did not, I know cuz 2 years later, this is the first time looking at using all this stuff, mostly still unopened!

I am downloading everthing from Sager's site, and I have the Book, but was wondering if anyone had a detailed recipe for order of and which drivers are best? A link to a thread? anything? The book just plain sucks

When should I invoke Windows Updates. Before or after all these freakin Drivers.

for instance the Book says:
1 Chipset
2 DirectX 8.1 (I only see that as part of the TV Tuner Drivers can I Install it seperately? Should I use a later version)
3 Intel Application Accelerator ???
4 USB 2.0
5 Audio
6 Video
7 Lan
8 Modem

WHAT about all the other crap on the 8887 downloads page, do i need any of them??

THANKS A TON FOR ANY HELP, Suggestions, musings, rants, links... anything

Sincerely,

tmapp

PS I never should have strayed from this forum, took it all for granted

By the way I have Hyperthreading, 1 HDD 1 DVDRW 1CDRW TV tuner...

Follow the order in the manual. I think it's ok to load XP SP2 last. There is an ancient thread out there somewhere on full install of drivers, but I can't find it. Surf the forum a bit, perhaps on 8887 driver install. Following are a couple of other old threads (8886 same as 8887), but don't get hung up on it too much. Your HT should be OK cause that's in the BIOS, so you can select the ACPI or multi-processor or whatever it is when you install XP. Enjoy!

No, the 8887 HT is "software", no hardware switch like newer ones. The BIOS should be OK. Maybe it will auto-detect. When you install XP and get to where you can check, open Task Manager, Performance, and see if 1 or if 2 processors are displayed. If 2 they you have HT. If not you may want to reinstall. Surf the forums or Google for info. Sorry I can't help you surf now. Some stupid thing called "work".

You'll be fine, I did at least 1 complete reinstall on my 8887, and I DOOO miss that HT and horsepower!

Thanks Mr Msyvc

That link was right on the Money!

It even had a picture of the driver disk which looked very familiar, alas I had it the whole time, stupid me, I stayed up all nite trying to recover my files...

Well, My system is running great now, on the new HD.

Anyone have any suggestions how to get my files of the decaying disk?

I would like to try hooking it up to another system as an auxilliary drive, but I will need an adapter for the little ide connector,

Or

how can I reinstall windows overtop the old drive, without formatting???? I just want it to run long enough to salvage some mp3s, and digital pix.

Of course I don't have any rescue disks or anything sensible like that

Very Sincerely,
tmapp

Are you saying you now have a 2nd, old, 8887 HDD that you want to recover files from? Add it as a second drive to your 8887, following the instructions here. You normally need a bracket but for a "temp" install you might be able to carefully lay it in there. I think you can also remove the TV Tuner and add yet another HDD there, but I haven't done that.

Aha

OK, your brilliant.

I have 2 CD/DVD Drives, A TV Tuner and A HD under the battery.

So I should swap the OLD HD for one of the CD/DVDROM drives?

will the little ide ribbon thingy in my CDROM bay fit right onto my old HD?

Is that the idea? I need sleep.

That is the idea. HDD "should" plug into the ribbon. Use the "2nd" CD bay and follow the instructions in that thread.
