toshiba vs sony???

I'm in desperate need of a laptop. I am having a difficult time deciding between the new toshiba satellite M35-S456 or the new sony vega VGN-A190 "17" inch. The latter is about $1000 more, which I am willing to pay if I can determine benefit. The salesman told me that they both have the same screen technology? I will be transporting it from work to home on a daily basis. I am fairlly computer challenged right now, but intend to overcome this and want a good piece of equipment that I will truly enjoy. I have an old imac now that I never used, because it was`so frustrating and incompatible. Any feedback comparing the 2, would be helpful. I have already purchased the toshiba, and have only a week left to exchange it for the Sony. So far, I'm really enjoying it. The x-brite screen seems to be great. Wondreing if the Sony is better. Help! Please!! mig

they're both horrible

And now for something a little more helpful...

I was also having the same quandry you are in a few weeks ago. I had a Toshiba 5105-S### (can't remember) and found it to be too heavy. I started looking for a new laptop and ended up deciding between a Vaio and the Toshiba M35-S456. In the end, I decided on the Toshiba for the following reasons:

1. The Toshiba's build quality felt better to me.

2. The speakers on the Toshiba are much better. If you listen to music on your laptop while you work, the Harman/Kardon speakers on the Toshiba will sound way better than other laptops.

3. The Toshiba has a DVD multi-drive that burns DVDs, and it supports +R/+RW and -R/-RW. That was a huge advantage to me because I have a video business and can now do my work entirely on my laptop if needed.

4. I had excellent luck with my previous Toshiba, and I use my laptop hard all day every day.

The salesman is correct about the screen. Many manufacturers use the same technology and they just call it different things.

I would choose the Toshiba, hand down.

Sony K25 Vs Toshiba A75 S206

Besides the fact that the sony had a DVD burner, is there any other differences between these, and which one would u guys suggest? I need this for college, and its also gonna be my desktop replacement. Anyone have any expierence? Because some people I talked to said that the Sony's are prone to having problems. Any truth to that? Thanks

The Internet is a strange thing. It allows people with problems to get the word out to the entire world easily. If you ask me, the stories you hear about how unreliable brand X is are largely due to the old adage that if you have a problem, you'll tell everyone you meet, but if you are pleased, you won't tell anyone.

well. always a dilemma. you may find equal amount of people defending this, that or any other brand. The first thing, just try it yourself. Typing, gaming, listening to music etc. Feel the keyboard. Play with the thing. Speaking of Sony, I have some empirical data. A couple buddies of mine had vaio for about a year. The only problem they mentioned (they used it 90% in travelling/carrying/etc) - Sony is fairly fragile. one fella accidently dropped it once (not really hard though) - the screen got dead pixels and Cd started skipping disks. (at least things like that didn't happen to my Dell that I used while was working in Prudhoe Bay, Barrow, Alaska Also there were some complaints about buttons on the keyboard performancewise (some keys stuck after 2-3 months..).
My choice would be Toshiba. So far I am happy with my M30 laptop. it's nice, fast, not heavy.

To all who have replied, I've kept the Toshiba, and I'm in love with it. It's lightweight, sturdy, high tech. The screen is great. The keyboard is comfortable. Speaker's are good. Everyone who see's it love's it, as well. Only small complaint is that it runs hot on the left hand upper underside. Thanks to all who have replied. Mig

Good choice in my opinion! I love mine. Just ordered a 7200rpm hard drive since that's the only weak link in this laptop. It will arrive Tuesday (probably) and I'll be happy.

I agree on your choice to keep the Toshiba. The Sony screens seemed just a little bit (not much) dimmer than the Toshiba. Plus, the Sony I looked at (S150) did not have a DVD burner and had micro dimms for memory (smaller than normal laptop memory). For the same money I feel I got much for with the Toshiba.

Hey asus fiend,

How much of a performance increase did you see going from the 4200rpm HDD to the 7200? My 7200 arrives on Tuesday and I'm curious to know what kind of performance I should expect.

I do a lot of video editing on this laptop, and I definitely feel the bottleneck in the HDD with the 4200.

Jimco,

You will be "amazed" then... there is a BIG jump in performance from 4200 to 7200.. believe it or not it was quite amazing going from 4200 to 5400. I tried them all! I try to keep 5400 or 7200 in all my laptops now. My main use for my Toshiba is video and graphics so you will definitely enjoy that 7200rpm drive!

Cool! Thanks, Tony. The drive is sitting on my front porch right now. UPS delivered it at 1:00. The wife and kids are away this evening so I'll have some time to get it in and installed.

I'll tell you, that is definitely the bottleneck in this thing. Other than the slow hard drive, this is a great machine!

Oh yeah... this is the first laptop I feel I can keep for quite some time. The screen is just completely awesome... I am even considering the Toshiba extended warranty to cover accidents just in case. I have never had anything to happen to a laptop I have owned but then again I switch laptops about every 6 months! HA... I think I can keep this one much longer!!!

Well, the 7200 drive is a big difference. I don't wait for much anymore, but the biggest difference is multi-tasking during high disk IO times. With the 4200, if the disk was working hard, I couldn't really use the machine at all until it finished. Now I can and it's great!

I'm going to work on some video tonight and see how that goes. This sucker is really cranking now!
