Is anyone else having this problem: I leave my laptop plugged in, come home from work, and when it's 8pm my clock on the taskbar says 5 pm. I'm losing hours. What gives?

if the laptop is several years old, you may need a new cmos battery

I just bought it. I've had it a week. What's a cmos battery?

then it's probably not that, but the cmos battery is a battery that's on the motherboard that keeps your bios/cmos settings and clock settings, etc. stored and running while there is no power to the computer

windows default time is set to pacific i think.. if you live on east coast it's 3 hours difference... windows time also connects to microsoft once a day to reset your time so it's exact dead on - this would explain your problem.. to turn this off go to start > run and run services.msc doubleclick windows time and disable it.. or you could just change settings to the right time zone.. i prefer the previous - i like sending as little information about myself to microsoft as possible.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Thanks.
