Running CAD?

Hello all,
I must say that this forum has be extremely helpful in bringing me to the virge of a purchase of a 5660. I have almost completely decided on it, but I am still comparing the 8200, and for me it comes down to two things. First, the screen difference. I have read almost everything about them, and will head to the computer store as soon as this is sent to at least compare what is there, so I don't need any comments on that. The second difference is processing power. I will be running AutoCAD probly 2002, and haven' t seen anyone report on it anywhere. Since a comparably priced dell would have the 2.0-m chip compared to the 5660 at 2.8, would the chip make much difference, I would be using it for Architectural Drawings, no rendering or any visually taxing stuff. Just wondered if anyone uses either of these two models for that, and any advice/notices they may have?

Thanks to all who post on the forum, you are very helpful.

I recently bought the Sager 8886, and I run AutoCAD 2000 on it, will upgrade to 2002 soon; it runs fine though. I love my new laptop... everything I work on runs so smooth. The only reason I haven't installed 2002 on my system is because I have so many projects to work on for customers that I am affraid to switch over so quickly because of all the new advancements in 2002; don't want to install it and have to figure out the new layouts and all. But anyways, to answer your question hopefully, AutoCAD runs very smooth on my Sager 8886 and I am pretty sure it will run just the same on the 5660.

My Specs: 2.8ghz, 1024MB Ram, and all the extra goodies

In terms of pure processing power, the P4-m 2 Ghz can't even be compared to teh P4 2.8... I mean the 2.8 is almost 25% faster than the 2.66, lol, and there is only like a 5% difference in clock speeds. There are many advancements in it and computations and programs that require extreme processor performance will undoubtedly see a boost in the 2.8 compared to any P4-m. Not to mention the fact that once you get faster hard drives in the laptops, the 2.8 will better be able to take advantage of it, since the hard disk is generally the bottleneck in the sagers (and all lappies, but more so in sagers since they're just so gosh darn beastly, lol).

solo, i think you should feel comfortable installing autocad 2002 on your computer. all of your existing 2000 files should transfer perfectly from one to the other. model space and layouts should all be compatible between these two programs. If you were updating from R14 there would be some minor complications. Essentially when I updated I clicked the option on the install wizard that enables both version of AutoCAD to exist on my hardrive at the same time. this was because i felt uncomfortable replacing R14 partly due to my lack of faith in compatibility, partly due to myself slightly preffering to work on R14, a matter of taste i guess. but for all my 3D rendering and layouts i work on 2002. the only problems i've encountered is going backward from 2002 to R14, but there is a save option when you type 'saveas' to choose to save the file as all sorts of things, including .dxf and .dwg (R14). I have ordered an 8886 and it should be arriving tommorow. I am very excited and I will post a short review sometime nextweek, including how my CAD reinstalling goes.
this forum rocks...thanks to everyone
(esp. beebster and torque)
already learned a ton.

Ooo, another review coming up :-) Sweetness, lol. I will ask some of the engineering techs here (I work at the computer labs in the engineering dept., so I provide some CAD tech support) to see what they think, too. I'll let you know!

Going back to the autocad stuff... I was talking with techs here at UD and we use autocad 2002 on the boxes we have here, they're 900 Mhz (we're upgrading systemwide this summer, lol) and they've got the big $3000 graphics card, lol, I just saw one, WOW. But, its RAMDAC is slower than the M9's and its memory is 64 megs, which is the same as the M9, so I imagine it will run the stuff great :-) As long as it is opengl compliant, and it certainly is :-) Hope that helps!
