AMD64 Processors with 64 bit Linux

Thread Starter
I'm going to college in the fall and have all but decided to buy a 64 bit AMD based notebook. I am curious as to which notebooks do well with 64 bit Linux (I'm in physics and a lot of our department computers run linux, so I will be at least dual booting linux, if not running purely Linux) I want to know if there are any driver compatability issues, unsupported parts in any notebooks, or any other problems putting 64 bit linux on any of these 64 bit AMD notebooks (Sager 4750 at Powernotebooks.com, Batallion S and SL Computers from Ibuypower.com) or if there is another AMD 64 bit system anybody thinks is very good. Also, what is the best linux distro in conjunction with 64 bit technology, who is the farthest ahead and has the most support for 64 bit lappys especially.

Thank you for all your help.

Probably Farthest along is SuSe, altho i cant say its my favorite distro, it hs nice hardware detection and theres a versioon that is optimized for the 64 bit proc, also Theres a 64 bit version of Gentoo if you need to squeeze every bit of uice out of your hardwarw and dont mind reading a guide to install it (ITS SOURCE BASED)

wrong. ATI have drivers for the 8xxx series and later. If you want mobile drivers, select Mobility FireGL T2.

Suse is good for a nice easy to use distro, which will be well optimized for your system as it is 64bit. I would recommend it if you are a Linux noob.

Also, the Batallion-SL (I think this one) is a Mitac 8355. There are many people who have successfully installed Linux on this machine. For hardware issues, try checking the mobo chipisets of prospective purchases against this one as I think that is probably the largest factor for incompatiblity... but I'd imagine it will work on most machines.

That would be: http://ati.com/support/products/work...15&submit.y=11

In the FAQ (http://ati.com/products/catalyst/linux.html), they clearly state this:

Systems using 32-bit processors from Intel (Pentium III and later) and AMD (Athlon and later) are currently supported. 64-bit drivers are under development, and should be available in a future release.

Even people in the Rage3D forums (http://www.rage3d.com -- premier ATI forums site) are bitching about this as it applies to Linux. So, no, there is no official 64-bit support yet for laptops (unless you hack a desktop driver).

No harm, no foul.

@Lyuokdea: The mobility 9700 is NOT officially supported (even in 32-bit mode). Some people have been able to get it to work. You can always use the Xorg/XFree drivers, but you will get no 3D support.
