Early eMachines were pieces of .... well you know. Lately their quality has improved significantly. One other thing to consider is that eMachines is simply a name on this machine. It is built by a company (I think in Taiwan) called Arima.

Yeah, and Arima is also used by VooDoo 860 which could cost as much as $3500-$4000 (no this is not my phone number ) bucks in a similar configuration as the M6811. The only problem with these machines that is worth discussing is the broken-hinge one but otherwise you can't find another laptop like this at such a low price.

If you are looking for a great laptop at an awesome price and arent looking for an ultra portable laptop that weighs less than 5 pounds then this is your laptop.

The build quality is exceptional, very sturdy and it really isnt bad looking at all. The power inside of it is a different story. It has the Athlon 64, a GREAT chip. It has a radeon 9600 64mb but people here with alittle overclocking can get benchmarks just as fast as radeon 9700's with 128mb. You can't go wrong for the price.

Emachines are great and cost really cheap but some people have cracking hinges that is the only problem with there laptops
post #8 of 18
The cracking hinge is a downer, but the performance more then outweighs it...

And if this thread is right, there might actually be a fix to the cracking hinge, so they won't crack again.

What do you guys think about the Compaq Presario R3240US vs. the M6810 ?
The specs are almost the same...
R3240US is 30 bucks more expensive... but it has a DVD+R/RW.

I'm I missing something special about the M6810?
It's the Compaq a good choice?

If you have no need for 3d, it would suffice. The GPU in that machine is antiquated. If Compaq/HP had a newer nvidia or an ATI 9600/9700, I probab;y would have bought that (or the HP) instead of my eMachines. Unfortunately, the GPU made it worthless to me.
