4750 Pictures and initial impressions

Other than a goof where I was shipped a 3000+ rather than a 3200+, everything else is running perfect. As a side note, many kudos to Luke and all the guys at PCTorque for the great assistance they were, it was Sager's fault, not theirs, that the wrong CPU was shipped, but their service was never lacking. They did everything to help resolve my situation the easiest. I'm still thinking it over, but at this point, I think I'll just go for a refund for the 3200, and keep the 3000, the performance is still amazing.

I ran Far Cry at max settings as this laptop's native resolution with nary a lock up or a problem. I am using the catalyst 4.5 (not 4.6 or 4.7 due to the DVD playback issues) omega drivers, and I received a 3dMark score of 3480 I believe.

I have had no issues with external heat, it's warm to the touch, but it's certainly not uncomfortable. I don't think I have any dead pixels (I can't see any!). I currently can not find a CPU heat monitoring program to check it with that is compatible with this mobo/CPU, if anyone knows of one, let me know. Also, if anyone knows something that I can underclock the CPU with, please let me know that too.

The screen is absolutely beautiful, the 17 " holds me in awe everytime I fire it up. I'm glad I went with this over the 5690...very glad.

I get around 2 hours battery life non-gaming and about 1 hour, 15 minutes battery life gaming.

Usb placement is funky, but not that bad. Firewire in the center front? Not sure what they were thinking there. Speakers are nice for a laptop, although I just use headphones/my home stereo (I hook it in with a special cord).

Here are the pics you have all been waiting for, if you want a close up, detail, or have a special request for a picture, just let me know :-):

All my images are huge and because I don't want to kill 56kers and I don't know how to thumbnail on this site, I'll just post a link to the list: http://www.onealdevzone.com/karak/ (Thanks for the hosting, guys! :-) )

If you have any questions, let me know.

Now jump in the sack and start hammering that thing! Looks lonely laying there all alone, go on, give it some attention .

Karak, what's your screen's native resolution? 1440x900 or 1680x1050?
i think the 4750's come with 1680x1050

1680x1050 - sorry I know my pics are fuzzy, it's a 3.2 megapixel camera and I am no professional by any sense of the word.

Noise - It CAN get loud, but if you were word processing and had battery saves on and it was downclocked a bit - it's fairly quiet.

how does the keyboard feel? solid, responsive, soft? I wanna know if I need an external keybord for gaming but it looks nice.

also, have you dl'ed powernow yet? It's great you're getting 2 hours (called it!), but with that you could get over 3 hours on light usage i hope. This excites me, I had been fearing that the battery life would suck on this one too, but 2+ hours for a 9lb DTR kick ass!

Karak,

Sorry to be a pest, but how much memory do you have? Are you running FarCry with the 1.1 patch?

I've tried running FarCry (unpatched) at native resolution on Max settings, and I get extremely low frame rates (like 1 or 2 FPS). I've currently got only 512MB (should have another 512MB tonight, hopefully), but other than that, we have nearly identical systems. I can't figure out how you get smoother gameplay with a 3000+ than I do with a 3400+, everything else being equal.

Ogre - I'm using power now :-).

Spooky - I have 1 GB of ram... and it was unpatched. I just patched it to 1.2, let's see how it runs.

There is little to no difference between performance on a 3000+ and a 3400+, the GPU is the bottleneck.

I am also running the catalyst 4.5 omegas.

Oh and Ogre - The keyboard is actually really nice and sturdy. I really like it. I was thinking that I might go external keyboard... but there really is no reason to. I still might get the MX700 duo and try it out, though.

so wait, does that mean you're using power ... now? as in you're plugged in at this moment? or are you using powernow ... now? or just powernow? lol jk

can't wait to get mine, still haven't ordered yet tho

I feel your pain... its almost like I'm waiting for my tracking number even though I haven't paid yet...

Not sure where you got that from; everything I've read points to anything but the GPU being the bottleneck. The fact that different speed CPUs using the same exact GPU show faster CPUs having higher scores was enough to convince me.

I'm not trying to pick a fight - I'm just wondering if I've missed something.
oh no, ur right. the 3400+ is definitely faster than the 3000+, the difference in games is slight tho, ~5% from what benchmarks I've seen. Outside of games is where you would notice the speed more, things like rendering and photoshop and things like that would see a bigger performance jump like ~15%. No research to support that, it's just what I've gathered from articles and whatnot.

Eerie how it resembles an 8790, though. Less of a blowout in the back, the USB ports are all on the side, the card reader is absent, save for one slot, etc. Not that much, though.

Karak, I have one piece of advice; PLEASE remove the red color for your 404 pages. I don't even want to read the text with red as the background. I had to turn off my browser's background rendering before I was comfortable reading the text.
