I plan to use my cl 56 to play some chess. I want to know if anyone has used any reasonably tough/complex chess softwares and how is the performance of the processor as well as the battery. I plan to use the latest chessmaster and fritz may be..

Thx

Actually all chess progs max the CPU. I use GNU Chess 5.0, i whips my ass even if I tell it to calculate moves for max 1 second

Well think how fast computer's make all other decisions... they can probally process milliions if not billions of moves in that one second . But human still beats computer at chess! Best chess player and best computer played and best chess player won!

What was his name? How old was he when he got the title (middle school = 13 years old?)?

I play chess all the time online, if you starting out try Yahoo.com Chess, and if you dont mind paying $35 subscription then go for ICC (http://www.chessclub.com/)

Fritz8 taxes the GPU extensively when using the 3d board.

ICC offers discounted rates for students... been a member for 3 years there. IMO, there is no better chess server - if you don't mind paying. The best free one IMO is FICS.

Ohh, skip Yahoo chess and try ICC (BTW, isn't it $50 subscription fee?). Rampant cheating on Yahoo chess (or MSN chess for that matter) makes it very un-fun.

Yes but Gary Kasparov did lose to Deep Blue if I recall correctly. One of the biggest challenges of IBM's development team is to beat the best human player.

Well, if you think about it, humans designed computers to think in the way humans do- computers didn't invent their own logic system. And in a dynamic situation like a game of chess, the reaction of a computer is often that, in response to the human moves, thus the human is still leading the sequence of action- so as long as the human doesn't mess up. Computers sure are fast and efficient but limited in creative capacity. The human brain is still the most intelligent and versatile machine in the known universe. Speaking of which, how is AI research doing?
