Laptop Recommendations

Thread Starter
I am going off to college in the fall and am buying a laptop. I would
like it to be a fast computer that can handle current games. Size
isn't a huge issue but I don't want something overly bulky. I have
about 2000$ to spend (a little over won't hurt, but should be
worthwhile). Right now a few I am looking at are the HP/Compaq nc800,
Inspiron 9100, the HP zx5000, and some Sager and Powerpro Models.

What I must have in the laptop:
-A fast processor
-128 MB video
-512 ram at least
-40 gig HD is sufficient
-3 Year Warranty
-XP Professional
-DVD/CDRW drive
-Wireless LAN
-Extra Battery
-Carrying Case

So if anyone has any suggestions for me it would be greatly
appreciated.

Is battery life a concern? Do you want widescreen? If not, the Sager 5690 looks like a great fit for you.

Basicly decide if battery life is important, and if you want widescreen or not, then go from there.

I'll go ahead and recommend that only laptop I have experience with.

The CL56.

For probably way less than you can get any of those laptops you mentioned you can get the CL56, w/ 1gig Ram, and 1.7 (or 1.8) Dothan, the 128mb 9700 Radeon, 60 gig HD (@7200rpm) and everything else you said.

You can't get the extra battery yet, but the CL56 should outperform those other systems by about 2hrs in battery life anyway.

Cl56 looks really badass... whats the best place to get it?

Also, it is a large laptop? And you can't buy extra batteries for it?

you CAN buy extra batteries.
no, its not large, it has a 15" screen and weighs only around 6lbs.
there are many stores that carry the CL56 including: rjtecj.com mwave.com ibuypower.com internetishop.com hypersonic-pc.com discountlaptop*s.com and a few more that i am missing.

A 4750-C costs right around 2000 with the specs you mentioned. It has 17" WSXGA+, amd athlon 3000+, 512 ram, ati 9700 128, 40 gig 4200 up to 60 gig 7200, wireless, and you can get a spare primary battery. It's a 9lb dtr with around 2 hours battery life.

Check out the ASUS M6N series. I've had one for a few months now and haven't been disappointed with it. It's about 6lbs and I carry it around with me. I have a good backpack that handle the size. The screen is very crisp and clear. I've played Far Cry, Hitman Contracts, UT2004 and NFSU. Works great. It has a 64MB video card but I think you can get the M6Ne which has an upgraded version of the Radeon card.

Good luck and happy hunting.
