If I put my laptop into 'sleep' mode when I reactivate it I get small black dots appearing all over the screen.

Has anyone experineced something similar, and if so, what can I do?

possibly motherboard the first signs i had of my motherboard dying was when my laptop would go into sleep mode and then i would get color blotches and lines all over the screen when i reactivated it, thats if it reactivated. Thats different then black dots so you may have a different problem than I had.

What graphics drivers do you use?

And does this happen when you notebook is on AC or battery power or both?

Yup, when my laptop had a bad motherboard that was also the first sign. Hopefully we don't wig you out. I'd recommend some serious testing on both A/C and battery power to see if other problems exist/begin.

I've read other reports of this happening with the new ATI Catalyst 4.7 drivers. What drivers are you using?

If it is the motherboard, it's not a problem. The laptop is only a month old, so 23 months left on the warranty

The problem happens when on AC and battery.

I'm using the drivers that came with the machine - how do I find out which version/type drivers those are?

i have the same graphic card and i had the same problem. On resuming from sleep appeared color lines and the screen was unreadable.

I was using the Omega Drivers 2.5.51 and i try to upgrade it to last version 2.5.58. The problem continued.

What i did was to uninstall all graphic drivers and graphic-related software in the laptop (hydravision, multires, radlinker...) and also the registry keys and i made a clean install of the Omega Drivers 2.5.58 and now it works perfectly!

Good luck

I had this problem but only saw it with battery power - didn't try hard to reproduce with AC pwer though. Disabling Powerplay fixed it. Click here for more information.

I had the same problem when using battery. The fix was to leave powerplay on to optimal performance when on battery mode.
