sound problem on windows xp startup on toshiba satellite 2410

Hi....I had my toshiba 2410 notebook tweaked about 3 months ago as it was sluggish with too many programs loading at start up. the computer is a mobile pentium 4, 1.9 ghz, DirectX 9.0b.
After the tweaking by the software tech the windows xp sound at start up is like a record skipping. i know that i can turn the sound off but do not wish to. the tech does not know the resolution of the problem as my regular CD's operate properly. The computer is running much better and there were no viruses or bugs in the system......but the start up sound is annoying. I have read some microsoft articles on start up sound problems but they relate to sony upgrading from ME to XP. Has anyone had this problem? I went through with the toshiba tech on the phone the uninstall and reinstall of the drivers off of the toshiba site and per my computer model but that did not help the problem........I really want to get this fixed!!!!!!!!

Second question is to do with the "~" that appears after there is a change made to the address book........this appears on the desktop and I understand that it is a gliche of OE and that it is actually the backup for your address book should entries get lost......but when I try to open it...the file does not know what program created it.........so how in the world is this "tilde" a benefit if I mistakenly lose my addresses and can' open the back up???? Regards (I genuinely hope that I can get a reply from someone my notebook has a full extended warranty until 2007 and of course toshiba does not deal with software issues)

I've noticed a similar sound glitch on startup on my wife's Toshiba 5105-S501. It started to occur just after I upgraded DirectX to 9.0b. I haven't tried downgrading and may try that tomorrow, as well as poke around to make sure I have the latest sound drivers.

No thoughts on your second issue. Sorry.

problem with sound at windows xp start up toshiba 2410

I tried a moment ago to send a message and must have hit the wrong key...I believe the message got lost....so here goes. I am such a newbie that I will revisit the windows update site to see if I can delete that DirectX 9.0b update....as a try....I do know that I made a big mistake when the drivers update was recommended by M$ and downloaded them and had mega problems ..I had to call toshiba to get advice and be told by them to go to their site and browse for their updates on drivers etc. per my laptop model...and that is what I do. A lesson learned well....only the hard way. I believe I will give it a go now and see what happens and will get back to you...thanks for taking the time and the interest Regards

I am still at trying to resolve this issue....as you can see I am persistent!! Inspite of this heat wave!! I went back to check on my DirectX 9.0b and found that 2 of the M$ updates were downloaded before the tweak of my 2410 DirectX 9.0 End User Time June 1, 2003.and Sept 2003 and I had no problem with the windows xp start up sound at that time....then I had the notebook tweaked April 5,2004 and the problem began after the tech did some changes....he said there were too many programs on start up....and the computer responded to the tweaks and is humming along except for the start up sound problem....which the tech says he has encountered in the past he vaguely remembers but has no solution for it. The other DirectX 9.0b was after the tweaking this past June 'KB839643........so I don't think this is the issue for me..again purely speculation. I even uninstalled my A/V program as was another suggestion and rebooted and that made no difference. Then another suggestion was to go to msconfig and uncheck one by one items on start up and click apply and close and reboot ...nothing changed the sound. I have few icons next to the time on the right side...volume, Lt Moh version 1.62 Ageres systems (my modem) battery, performance and msn messenger not signed in.Even my microsoft office is not set for start up. It was tweaked so that only necessary programs were at start up so I believe I have eliminated the possibility of the windows sound competing with a program at start up. I hope that you may come up with some ideas......I checked out the sounds in the control panel the asterisk, log off, device disconnect, exit, low battery....etc. sounds all "ok".....and even the WINDOWS at start up sound was FINE.........there is only one other suggestion that has been made to me and that is that the tech did something to the WAV???? whatever that is because my regular CD's play fine....it is just this start up and the forum member said WAV controls start up sounds....so I am waiting to hear further from this other forum member. I will keep you posted and hope that you will do likewise!!!!! Regards

Yesterday I was in contact with toshiba phone support as I am still under warranty and the tech ....Level 2...called me back in respect of the sound problem and suggested that I go in to msconfig and disenable all programs and reboot and see if there is any change in the windows start up sound. I did this and nothing changed .......I can not understand this occurrence.....after tweaking there are less programs on startup and there were no sound problems until the tech tweaked the notebook....I had some input from another forum and the "Wav"....was mentioned....but being a newbie I don't understand what that is.....and what effect it could have on my windows start up that sounds like a record skipping. Yet I go into sounds and click asterisk, exit, log off and "Windows start up" and the sound is fine!!! Does anyone have any ideas on this ????? Regards

I still haven't found anything. Being that the glitch is during the startup screen and no other time, I'm guessing it has something to do with the way the new Directx 9.0b is initializing the sound card. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot of info out there on this. I'll continue to keep my eyes open, and let you know if anything comes up.

sound problem on windows xp start up

I really hope that this can be resolved....I asked the tech at Level 2 from toshiba tech support when he called me back after my original query and I asked him about DirectX and he could not offer any reason why that would suddenly affect the sound as the update from M$ was already in place before I had the computer tweaked and I had no start up sound problems....I do not use system restore so there is no way of checking....the disabling of the system restore was at the recommendation of the toshiba tech....he said too many hijacker etc. problems hide and then resurface when you restore..and I have had that confirmed with other techs.........keep researching....I certainly am and will post again if I hear or am succcessful with anything....as mentioned .....the WAV has been repeatedly suggested to me to pursue as it has to do with start up sounds...... hoping for success!!!!!!!!!!!
