^^^ Bump what about the XPS or anything else
post #24 of 43
Having owned three Dells in rapid succession (D800, 8600, XPS) I can tell you that they are not that well built. A bit worse than the Sagers I've tried, worse again than the Sony A190 and considerably worse than the Asus or IBMs.

I'm sure Dell owners are very proud, but size isn't necessarily an indication of quality.

Cheers

I second the Tadpole... Mmmmm~ Solaris on a my notebook with SPARC chips... It's basically a Sun laptop just not branded or made by Sun. Pricing isn't that bad either considering that SPARC chips are pricey and all.
newb question...

what are SPARC chips and what do they do?

ok guys I have over 120K in legally owned software and run a very serious business.

So I need extreme power hard drive space and a super high quality screen. Are u telling me this is all I can get.

I'm willing to spend about 3K tops, but would rather not spend more than 2K. Is Acer any good with the 1712 Monster. I don't care if it weight 18lbs, I just need something that will truly be a desktop replacement and give me the ability to grow within 3-5 years.

I need to buy this in less than 2 weeks or I miss this years budget all together.

If I had to buy today I would buy either the Acer Ferrari 3200 or 3400. ALL the features, desktop replacement class power, in a PORTABLE package. You just can't go wrong with any of those...

ok I found an Acer 1714 SMI XP Pro for $1500, does this seem like a good price?
not too bad. I think the resolution tops out at 1280x1024 though. Plus you can use mostly desktop parts so upgrade at will (except for video card). There is also the acer 18XX series that is PCI-e but 17 inch widescreen instead.

What about IBM T42's or the HP NC6000?

btw where did you find the 1714 for 1500....?
Check out the Sager 9860. I've just ordered mine and am waiting for shipping information on it. It's got just everything the Dell XPS has and more! Plus, you can have dual Optical drives on it.

I hear on these forums that the 9860 are having some speed issues and such, plus I can save 1500+ that's enough for a new Dcam. Either way I must spend 3K, I would rather get a new lappy and new Dcam and maybe a new photo printer as well. Wooooooooot budget spending time.
