m6809 XP Pro upgrade- video adapter lost

I recently had XP Pro installed on my computer to fulfill school requirements. When I got it back, i noticed that my display wasn't as good as before. The max resolution it can be set at is 1024X768, as opposed to the 1200x800 i could get before. I can't play any DVDs either. Also, when i go to my advanced display settings, there is no adapter information available. I tried to re-install the mobility radeon 9600 driver from the restore CD, but failed, saying that i needed to install a VGA driver first. Anybody know how I can fix this? Thanks

Install the omega's. I would go with the ones based off of cat 4.6 though, i hear the newest ones released this week have DVD playback issues, i could be wrong though. Sounds like whoever did the install didn't install drivers? Double check that.

I am running the new ones based of the 4.7 catalysts with no DVD issues as of yet. I have only played 2 or 3 since update though.

Uninstall your old ATI control panel, install the omega's setup.exe

Solution

Try this. The actual problem isn't the video card, it's the AGP bus (as far as I've been able to discern - I work for eMachines btw). Go to your drivers folder (whether it be on your restore CDs or still on your hard drive) and install the Chipset drivers, then reinstall the Radeon drivers (also from the drivers folder).

Try that and if it doesn't work let me know.

Do you try to provide useful information? Or do you assume that all customers are new to computers like the online tech support? J/K

lol, well with some of the calls we get you have to really wonder...

Anyway I tried this another time today, and that seems to be the solution. It's possible you may get a STOP error after installing the Chipset (don't know the consistency of that yet), but you can ignore it.

UPDATE: We tested it here in house, and it works. The STOP you may see is 0x8E, and will appear when restarting after installing the Chipset. Don't worry about it, it will work fine after that.

I would suggest installing the latest chipset drivers instead of the ones on the restore DVD. Check viaarena.com.

actually i suggest using the given drivers(as Emachine man has it right this time, whether you are new or not to these issues)
first as I have run into the same problem. You just missed where xp pro said find the chipset drivers and agp bus got skipped. You can (long way) restore and put drivers extracted onto a cd(hyperion drivers packed in the .exe that is)
when Xp setup asks for the drivers then point it to the extracted drivers. Then do any updating when install finishes properly

short way, reinstall origanal drivers via HD or restore disk 3 and get stop 0x8E.
reboot as stably as you can and it seams to hold right after that.

I tested his advice before I posted this and does infact work.
