ASUS M6N - Is this a good Notebook?

I'm thinking of getting an ASUS M6N as a replacement for my desktop, plus I'll need it for school. I'll probably have it on for long periods of time (like my PC), use it for internet and word processing but mainly use for movies, music and the occasional game. The specs are below:

Intel Centrino 1.5GHz
15.4" WideScreen TFT
80GB HardDrive
512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 64MB
DVD/CDRW
IEEE1394
USB 2.0 (4 ports)
TV-Out
Built-In 802.11b/g

The price is roughly $2200 (Canadian funds).

My main concern is that I don't know much about ASUS Notebooks. Are they reliable? Is this a good setup? Should I opt for the 1.6GHz for $88 more or the 1.7GHz for $129, or will it not make much of a difference? Do you think the price of the laptop will drop by the end of August, or will it go up?

Any other comments would be greatly appreciated!

It's pretty nice. Did you know about the Asus M6BNe? Basically like an upgraded version of that one.

Isn't the only difference between the M6BN and the M6BNe the video card? The M6BN has an ATI Radeon 9600, and the M6BNe has an ATI Radeon 9700... http://usa.asus.com/products/noteboo...s/m6_index.htm

the m6bne has a 15.4" widescreen instead of the m6n's 15"

One more question, would it be worth it to buy the 3 year warrenty for an extra $180 (regular warrenty is 1 year)?

Well I'm in Toronto and I know of only 2 stores that sell them...I guess it would be a good investment to get the extended warrenty.

Now as for the processor, should I stick with the 1.5GHz, or shell out an extra $88 for the 1.6GHz, or $129 for the 1.7GHz?

1.5 all the way, i opted for 1.6 because it was only 30 bucks to upgrade for me, the setup is very good, if yo uare usig it for school might i suggest getting the bay battery for anoter 100 bucks. increase life by 2-3 hours

So the 1.6GHz or 1.7GHz don't make too much of a difference compared to the 1.5GHz? Not worth the extra $$$ for the upgrades? (I'm on a tight budget anyways...)

Just a side note, I heard that the comparable speed of Centrino to P4 is by a multiple of 1.7, is that true? That would make 1.5GHz = 2.55GHz, 1.6GHz = 2.72GHz & 1.7GHz = 2.89GHz.

more around 1.5 as a general rule, but thats just a rough conversion, there better at different things, lets say you have a 1.5 p-4 thats still blazing fast for most applications and at 2.2 ghz comparison because of clock cycles thats much better. 1.5 should be great. my friend has t40 thinkpad with 1.3 p-m and that thing games fine and runs all his school stuff great (cyber security/computer science major)

so do you notice a speed difference between the 1.3 p-m and 1.5 p-m? I'm really considering upgrading to the 1.6 for $88, but I'm on a tight budget and I'm not to familiar with the Centrino's (never really "used" a Centrino)...

honestly dont notice any differnce unlesss your ripping a dvd or something then you can notice by how long it takes, but honestly in my opinion anyhing over a gig is good. 1.5 is as fast as you will need for quie some time.

Really? I just made a the same laptop on their website and it comes up to $2399, but I can get the same one from the store for $2102 (except it won't come with a free carrying case).

As for the processor, do the Dothan's start at 1.7 or are their Dothan 1.5's and 1.6's?

Well, there's only 2 stores that I've found that sell them. Are you in Toronto? One of them is called Pacific Notebook and the other is FJComputers

I'm in Thornhill. Do those stores have websites?

Not that I know of...I'm sure there are other computer stores that carry ASUS Notebooks, but from the ones I've looked at, I've only found the 2 mentioned above. Look around Thornhill (pick up a computer paper and call up some of the stores that advertise in there), there's probably a store there that sells them.
