Can a Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB run Half Life 2 and Doom 3?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I was wondering if a Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB DDR can run Half Life 2 and Doom 3 smoothly at 1024x768 resolution and at about a constant 30+ fps

Intel Centrino 1.5GHz w/1MB cache
512MB DDR PC2700
Toshiba 60GB 5400RPM

probably not on high settings. on lower settings, probably.

Game isn't out yet, no one told you?

Probably depends what the rest of the system is too.

My Mitac 8355 AMD64 3200 w/ 1 gig RAM, ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro, Hitachi 7200RPM 60 gig HDD easily runs these new games:

UT 2004 at highest settings > 1024 x 768 (I've forgotten what resolution atm)
Battlefield Vietnam at medium settings at my native 1400x1050.

This is like trying to predict who's gonna win the world series...you know who's playing, you know what they are possibly capable of, some might have even seen them play each other.....but when it all comes down to it a lot of variables come into play, and you just don't know till they meet. I wouldn't try and predict this off of 1-2 articles you READ. Nothing is final till it's had it's public release.

Nobody knows because they are not out yet. We can only speculate...Why would you ask that????

I have a p-m dothan 1.8, 512mb pc2700 ram, 60gig 7200rpm hd, 128mb mobility fireGL T2 (which is basically a 128mb 9600 since im using omega drivers). Using the .02 alpha of doom 3 i get almost 50fps avg. in 800x600 and about 32fps avg. in 1024x768.....and this is a two year old compiled version not optimized at all

The newest PC Gamer has a whole article devoted to this topic. Its a Q&A with Doom3's lead programmer.

Low-End System:
CPU: 1.5 GHz P4 or AMD equivalent
Ram: 512 MB
Video Card: Geforce Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500

Mid-Ranged System:
CPU: 2.4Ghz P4 or AMD equivalent
RAM: 1 GB
Video Card: GeForce 5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT

Given that these are in terms of PC's you'll have to make a few conversions for laptops.

It should run fine at the lowest settings on 1024x768.

The leaked Doom 3 Alpha is not even close to what it is now...you might as well be comparing it with UT2K4.........At least it is a finished product....

Gonna have to agree here. This is a pointless thread. Wait a little over a week and you'll know for sure. If this is holding up your buying a notebook now, i would wait till Aug. 4 and you'll have all the feedback you could imagine.

I dont think one really needs to wait to see if his notebook will be able to run Doom3. As has been shown at anandtech... a 9600 Pro (desktop version) with a 3.0 P4 and 512mb of ram was able to get an average 40fps in Doom 3, about 2 months ago. As we all know the mobility 9600 is somewhat close to the 9600 pro... and thus I think it is safe to say that his notebook will definetely be running at around 30 fps.

BTW: The settings on this were XGA with medium quality settings.

So to answer your question regarding Doom3... yes you will be able to play it at the settings you mentioned.

Oh and I disagree with some people here... this is not a pointless thread. Also.. to the guy that started this thread.. sometime next week HardOCP is going to be doing a real nice article answering the questions that many like you have... "will xxxxxxxx computer with xxxxxxx specifications be able to run Doom 3?"

Thats pretty much my point, but i was just giving everyone an early estimate of what to expect even at a minimum. I expect a complete version to run MUCH faster than a two year old alpha so my prediction is 1024x768 on med settings would produce a decent framerate for 9600 users. But you're right we won't know until it comes out.

I think that we'll all be fine. It supposedly can playably on a p-4 1.5 with a geforce4 mx, and runs fairly well on an athlon xp 2500+ with a geforce3. No worries.

I still dont think you have to wait until the game is released to see if you will be able to run it or not like you guys are saying.

The benchmarks at anandtech were done under the supervision of id, nvidia, and ati, and they were done on a pre-release Doom 3 for benchmarking. Even carmack was there...

Keep in mind though that the results from this test were done with un-optimized drivers, so you can expect somewhat better performance.

wooops reply ...meant to edit...see below

You know the funny part, when everyone was talking about benchmarks, they didn't seem to matter before, and now look at everyone. Running "good" to one person is tottaly different than it is to another, so yes, the conversation is pointless. All we need to do is link him to the review, and that's it. None of you (unless beta testers) are qualified to tell this guy it's going to run "smooth" at xxx settings.

HardOcp did a review of Doom 3 already. A DESKTOP 9800XT does roughly 50 fps at 1024x768. You can call it speculation but I woulnd't hold my breath on that 9600...mobility no less to run it without seriously dumbing down the image quality.

Exactly my point, take the reviews with a grain of salt. 50 FPS to one might as well be 1FPS to another. No need to speculate how it's going to run on ones machine and if it'll run "good".

Not only was it done on unoptimized drivers but those benchmarks are also over a year old
