8887 boot problem

ok so i've been trying to find some info on boot problems. but i couldn't find anyone with the similar problem.

when i power on my 8887 i dont get anything on the screen. the 3 keyboard lights come on and the cdrom spins up and then slows down, and then the process repeats over and over again. it seems like its constantly rebooting every 5 seconds before the bios even shows up.

i was wondering how to reset the bios on the 8887 or flash it if possible. if i can flash it where can i get the latest bios?

it is not under warranty and i refuse to contact sager support as their support is extremely lacking.

if ayone could help me out i would appreciate it a lot!

EDIT: tried flashing the bios. floppy drive never even seeks.

i think u can reset it by taking out the power supply and the battery

Once you remove the A/C and battery, you may also need to depress the Power On switch for about 5/10 seconds.

what about the battery on the motherboard? i tried this by taking the motherboard battery out too. should i leave the small battery in and try?

If you took out the small battery on the motherboard, teh CMOS setting should have been reset. Wouldn't hurt to try it.

I have the same exact problem on a 8880. I pulled out the main and cmos batteries and still nothing. I am going to leave both batteries out of the unit over night and see what happens. Does anyone else have any info? I tried calling Sager and Emailing then and they have not returned my call yet. (its been 2 hours).

Thanks,

Michael

Kojetin, i did the same thing. left batteries and power off for 2 days. still nothing. it's also been several days since i called sager. their support is never open. this is very frustrating.

Ok, I have an old 8880 that about after a year... it wouldn't even light up or boot up if I pressed the power button. Nor would the charging light come on if I plugged in the ac power supply. All that would happen when I pressed the power button was a noise could be heard... sounding like a faint squeel type of noise coming from the battery or something. Anyway, if I take my battery out (which is a major pain because of the screws) and replace it.. the laptop powers on fine with or without the ac power plugged in. Sometimes, with the battery out, I hear it IS necessary to hold the power button down for up to 30 seconds... not sure about that though.

i also hear the faint squeel with the keyboard out, sounds like it comes from just above the CPU. i'm thinking some capacitor or something is fried.

My 8887 won't turn on either. I get nothing on the screen. The lights and fans turn on but nothing else. Is my mother board fried? Or is it the processor. Anyone get a response from sager, sounds like there are a few of us with this problem. Email direct if you have any hints:

Today i got exactly the same problem, I remove the battery, the cpu and the ram, put it all back again and got it working. When turning on i got some bios error but put it the default values and now is working fine. I have a 8886.

BTW when I remove the ram I found that each 512 chips are differents, one with a label that says Trascend and the other that looks generic. Thats an upset to me because i think the set has to be the same brand and model for better performance.

Yeah, I would never mix RAM in any system I build... unless it's one I did not care about.

Glad to know the removal of the components helped. Did you blow the dust out as well? I like to take my 8887 apart once a year to clean it all out as best I can.

Ohh, sure I did. the heatsink was almost blocked of dust and fine hair.

About the RAM I was very upset because now its too late to request from Sager a set of the exact model.

Sager's techsupport isn't 'open' per say. Go to their support page and select Request a Call Back. Then pick a time and they've always been really good at keeping to that for me.

People gripe and complain about their support, but in the end, you talk to a real technitian... one of the people that actually builds your computer, not some call center guy with a manual over in India. I choose Sager's policy any day.

I had the same problem on my 8880 a year ago. to fix it all i did was take out the Hard Drive then put it back in. Then it worked fine.
