FarCry

I just bought this game. It is quite amazing. If your system is capable of playing it (decently) then I suggest you get it. I do have a couple of questions...

1). This is for people with a WSXGA screen. Are you able to play it play it at 1680x1050 and all settings at medium without it slowing down? I just installed the Omega driver, and it seems like the one from Dell was better. Haven't played FarCry with the Dell one, I switched before I installed it.

2). Is it just me, or is running people over with the cars fun? Especially when you go off a jump and land on them.

3). How long is it? I hope its not a "I beat it in 2 days" kind of game.

w00t

Far Cry definitely r0x0rs. I don't know how my i8600 will fare since I have not gotten it yet.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but what is this famous omega drivers that I have been reading about in so many posts.

Far Cry is a long game ... so enjoy() it while the thrill lasts!

PS: Are you using a notebook cooling pad by any chance ... since I heard from one fellow the i8600 can get **very** hot when gaming for a long period of time, to the point it can boil water.

i beat it in 3 weeks, playing casually 1-2 hours about 5 times a week

Its about a 20 hour game, but in Realistic mode they come in waves LOL. Its actually quite funny!! and Val taking a shower under the waterfall is nice to look at

Hi there

I have to agree FC is amazing and you will have quite some time fun with it.
It gets pretty hard in the end especially the last level called VOLCANO so stay low there.
Btw there is NOWAY that you should play FC with medium settings cause you lose lots of eye candy.
I played it at 1280x800, that is a lower Widescreen seeting so it should work fine with you and all the settings to high. Very high doesn't make a real difference that you can see. BUT one setting makes a great visual difference. Set your water quality to ULTRA HIGH and you see some amazing refecltions that you only get at ultra high. If you think that is too much of a perfomace hit, as it really is, then set it back to high. But in my opinion I don't wanna lose the eye candy and will pay with some frames for it as in FC not lots of monster herds are attacking you.
If you need more suggestions let me know

Starsheep,
you play FC on your 8600 with those settings?
I play it at the highest settings!

@Spookymonster

Yep without any problem. Ok sometimes but very rarely the FPS drops a bit especially indoors with all the lighting and stuff but I never had any problems outdoors, plays like a charm.
Ok I have to admit it could play smoother but as I said I did a trade, more eye candy to lower frames.
However as FC is not a game where lots of moster herds a storming towards you and you are dead any way if you try to storm the place you don't really need the ultra FPS to play. Mayb this is just my opinion but as I said, played like a charm all the way through

PS: I even played all settings at very high in the beginning but that was too much for my Radeon so I tuned it down to high. But as I said, leave the water at ULTRA HIGH or you will really miss something :-)

@battery life and gaming

I tested that and with batteries in I played for around 90 minutes or so and after that I listened to music and watched a movie and the two batteries still weren't drained completely :-)

u guys play far cry at such high settings? i did an autodetect and it gave me 1024x768 resolution with low settings. i tried increasing setting, and it did ok on medium settings but i notice some lag above that.

and i'm using a dothan 755 with 1 gb ram! hmm whats wrong with my laptop?

I'm running at 1280x800 will settings on high, so yours is definately not running right. Have you installed the Omega driver? I did, but I took it off and it was much better.

Hmm ...

Odd. I have the exact same specs as Wooster and my autodetect gave me 1024x768 at low detail, too. It runs fine at medium with ultra-high water, but I can tell any higher it'll get a little laggier. I'm running at 32-bit color.

I've done a clean install of Windows with minimal TSRs. I'm using the Radeon drivers, though.

same here too, i'm also using 32 bit, would switching to 16 bit help? although i don't see an option to change that in the game, maybe because my desktop is already set to 32 bit? hmm

anyway, mine runs on medium 1024 resolution pretty well, i tried increasing the resolution, and it started to lag.

wooster, do u get any lag at all, at your settings? i didnt try omega as it affects my dvd playback.

OOops ...

My bad. I thought that I saw some resoultions with 16-bit color. I just took a closer look and there isn't any. I must have been imagining things.

lol

hey now that i'm playing outdoors with trees/bushes and stuffs, it can run well at wooster settings! strange huh? haha

ähm, did anybody dare to read my post???

With my settings, all on high and water on ultra high, you can play very well and the game runs really fine outdoors but you get some slowdowns indoors. Why that is I have no clue but thats how it is. Seems like indoors all the lighting and stuff really kills performance.
And what I also said is that I traded some speed for eyecandy but in my opinion the game still plays well within playable FPS limits

Oh and I am using the latest Omega drivers

Yeah Indoors does put a hit on performance at times but still quite playable at high settings, took me about 2 weeks to beat playing a couple of hours a day, Its a Kick Ass Game, right now I'm playing Painkiller and its a Blast, Beautiful graphics and really creepy Levels, I'm really lovin this game....

Drop shadows to medium and lighting to medium or high, that will really help your framerates indoors.

Amazing...

Well, I've been playing at 1280x resolution with most settings turned to Medium and Water to High. Anti-Aliasing is definitely turned off. It becomes choppy when you use the binoculars and zoom in while grass or a tree is in front of your binoculars. Some locations are choppy as well.

So, I don't know how you guys are doing it with High settings...

I'm using the latest ATI Omega driver, but didn't turn off anti-virus.

Also, I'm currently back down to 384MB of RAM for now (and it's DEFINITELY super-choppy.) When I had 1.3GB of RAM, it ran just fine at those settings. I should be getting my 2GB next week
