About to return my Ati 9700, I'm PISSED!!!

Dude, I can't take this anymore, I keep getting a draw error from my ATI and it keeps frezzing my computer! I don't care about the benchmarks, If I can't play simple games like H&D deluxe, then what can I play. I get the same error with Farcry and C&C generals! Does anybody who has the Nvidia 5700 have any problems playing the games? I have tried reverting my drivers to the 7.97 version, down back from 7.99. I still crash! I am going to try the OMEGA drrivers, because I'm desperate. . I am about to call Alienware tomorrow and tell them to ship me a NVIDIA and they can take this 9700 and shove it! Damn, I spend all this money and this crappy video card keeps taking a dump. I know you are all crazy trying to get one, but believe you me if you have an nvidia and your games are working, then YOUR lucky!

I'm Pissed!
Dissapointed Alienware! Very Dissappointed!

could be a bad video card, or maybe your motherboard is a reversion that has problems with the 9700?
Yeah it must be the video card. Totally must be, beside the fact that 50% of the people in this forum have that card and no one else (or maybe a few, I don't know, aint gonna search either) is having the problem. Totally must be THE 9700. Get a clue.

Thanks! I already have a clue and there are quite a few people having this problem, I don't know if it is this particular video card or the fact that there is something inherintly wrong with the 9700 in general. That is why I will contact AW tomorrow. Thanks for the advice though.

Tanker-Z try this....

Uninstall the ATI drivers. Use driver cleaner. Then, remove the battery, unplug AC adapter. Remove keyboard, then remove CMOS battery for 30 seconds.

Install battery and keyboard and plug in AC. Install Omega Drivers.

Once Omegas are installed restart computer. Defrag HDD. Restart computer.

Right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, Radlinker. Check clock rate change box, adjust core to 450, memory to 250. Click set, then ok. Click current then ok. Apply, then ok.

Restart Windows...then....we'll see.

BTW, there are no 766 mobo revisions that have compatability issues with the 9700. If your 51M has glowing eyes, the 9600 and 9700 are compatable.

Tanker, let us know how you get on with Tech support and what they say they are going to do about it.

Yeh tis a bummer that the card isnt working properly keep us posted with any developments with the tech support and try what helidude says - you never know it might work

I'm thinking his 9700 was inadvertantly OC'd while on battery only. In particular, while under 25% of battery.

I recently did this same thing not realizing it. Man....what a hassle! FWIW, I tried everything to get the proper coralation back. No way Jose! Clearing CMOS is the only way...besides beating your head against the wall.

BTW, if you overclock. Change all 3 sliders to max performance all the time down to 0% battery life. Makes life much easier. This is done in Powerplay settings.

romeobaby, you should use that attitude for good, not evil

Tanker have you tried reducing your AGP Speed in the "SmartGart" settings to 4x instead of 8x.

Oh also, how do the Omega Drivers work? I tried installing them when I re-formatted my hard drive, but all it did was screw up my display settings; the screen went blank even though you can hear the OS is still running. I had to go back, uninstall, and then install the regular drivers.

Can someone clarify on how to install/use? Should I give the Omega Drivers a second chance?

RdLdr1, I also had this problem with the Omega's. When running a game the screen go's blank then you can hear the game continuing but no screen. I corrected this by reducing the AGP Apeture to 4x, and there seemed to be no noticable reduction in performance.. but I am still considering changing back to AW's 7.99's instead.

Thanks. Shouldnt the Omegas improve performance? or should I stick with the 'stock' drivers?
From what a few other members have said, if you don't plan on OC'ing and you're display isn't giving you any problems, then stick with the stock drivers. That's what I plan to do.

To me there's nothing worse than having to troubleshoot your own PC. I have to help out with it at work but if I have to come home to it.... Liquor me up first and then shoot me.

There is a new Bios flash (1.16.36) most likely you have it, but if you don't, then most likely you should try it, it fixes problems with (Radeon 9700) :-p

Jake-

I upgraded anyway W?BIC...it did fix a boot problem i was having though (Bios error. Press F1 to continue)

OK!

Here is an update.

I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with AW and they are sending me a new Ati 9700 replacement card. I had asked him (James) if he has heard of this error and he said no. I also asked him if I continue to get this error with the Ati if I can exchange the card with the Nvidia and he said that it is possible, but he doesn't think that I should have the problem with the new card. I hope he is right. Since hollisr exchanged his card for an Nvidia right out of the gate, I have become the guinea pig. I wanted them just to send me the Nvidia, but I know how "great" the Ati is supposed to be. I have yet to enjoy its splendor, but I am willing to give them one more chance. I'll let you know when I replace my card if my issue has been resolved.

Thanks for your help.
