While it might be possible to upgrade the cpu, you are not going to be able to upgrade it to the new Pentium-M.

Brief answer, no, not that it's worth it anyhow. There was a P3 1.0 and 1.13, I think, but they used a different socket. The older P3s, I think they maxed out at 900 or 950 or something along those lines.

AH! Good Point! Rather than making a Assumption here but from Exp with Desktops(Although little different I suppose) most of them were(HP's) never really soldered on..
At least I hope not..For god sakes..I hope someone knows..

That's called an Embedded Processor. They are more common in very small devices, like tablet PCs, Pocket PCs, PDAs, etc. In Laptops, they are avoided because it costs more money to produce upgraded versions than to "form factor" the motherboards, and simply plop the chip in.

I have heard of cpus being soldered in, in notebooks. I cant remember any specific names, but I know there have been some.

Oh, sorry...must be more tired than I thought. I meant to say they are usually avoided in laptops. My parents actually have an older Soyo laptop with an embedded Cyrix processor. But, like I said, it's a very small laptop.

is it possible to upgrade a 1.7 dothan CL56 to 2.0 dothan in the future (when prices are lower)?
Yes, assuming there are no variations in the motherboards and BIOS versions sold by the various vendors (most likely not, but it is impossible to tell whether Compal sells the same stuff to everybody).
