You guys are forgetting that there is an upgrade available to you... the 5700. It may not give you a stellar performance increase, but it is an upgrade.

not for the original mobo owners... according to the chart they can only "upgrade" to the 9600 from an nvidia 5600...

Hi footpedal,

Yes, his 766 immediately recognised new hardware and installed properly. We did run a quick '03 test and went from 2900 to 3350 with mild OCing.

He then offered me $500 for the card, which I declined. I havent talk to him since.

Some people and their attitudes....kill me!

I should call and offer him a soft modded 9600 thats cranking out 3500+ '03 scores. We'll see. I kinda like that card too.

What did you do to get 3500 out of that 9600?
I just looked at my notes. Its 3300+ not 3500. Sorry

I starting to believe like everyone else, AW screwed us!!! but crap,, the american way i guess,... if no ATI or nVidia upgrade as AW said when i got this, i am going to sell this and go to dell..

P.S to all... keep an eye out in the for sell section,,, i may be posting soon,,,
heck, its fairly new system,, only 3 months plus 4 days old today!!!!
least someone can get it in days from me,, instead of months from AW

I think you guys may have a good, "class action" lawsuit if Alienware doensn't pull through for you guys. I feel bad because I sold my Alienware to someone touting this feathure to him. FYI Dell should be releasing a ATI 9800 upgrade for the XPS with 256mb or ram in a few weeks. It's expected to be 75% faster than the 9700 and produce 3Dmark scores near 5361 according to The Inquirer!

Mobility Radeon 9800
We recently did a review of the Dell Inspiron XPS desktop replacement notebook. Well here we have some news that might cause you to hold off on your purchase for a few days, if you were planning on dropping the green to get one. It looks like next month Dell is going to be offering the Mobility Radeon 9800 on its machines. Just think of the possibilities if Dell sticks with their "one future video card upgrade" policy. Keep in mind if you're doing this for school, though that it usually takes some time for Dell to ramp newer products up, so don't get too scared when you hear a ship date of a month off. Thanks, Tyler.

Great...I should have gone with dell

I am also bothered because by looking at the mobo revision sheet...they must have known for quite a while that certain mobo's were not compatible with the 9700...sounds like they were doing some damage control by stating they were trying to get the upgrade to work...I feel very misled and upset...I guess I will have to go with the 5700 as my only upgrade...that really blows as it's not even a really big upgrade.

Unless AW offers the 6800go as an upgrade or a mobo upgrade...I will be an upset person trying to sell their $4K+ non-upgradeable lappie

I ordered a 5700 last night when I got home from work, the price is REALLY good right now, the tech support and sales guy were hyping up the 6800. The tech guy said he had a 6800 installed in a Area51M on his bench, however he stated that the 6800 upgrade board required a larger 165W power supply, so the 6800 upgrade will be very expensive! Somewhere around $550 for the board and card.

The tech guy also stated the my "4001" series board could take the 9700, however they have none in stock. Which is fine for me since I am an Nvidia guy.

HUH??? If what the tech told you is true then I take back all that I have said...but then again how many times have the techs told imaginative versions of what they thought was reality? I have little faith in what they say! I will call and attempt to order a 9700 tonight...and I am DROOLING at the thought of the 6800go!

As always great info...Time-Pilot!

Yeah, i find all the talk, B$ till AW makes a statment,,, but of course,, we still
might not be able to upgrade to anything other than a (5700 card ) if thats even considered a upgrade from a 9600...
heck you'll need more power supply and if your mobo's not setup to take the additional power, you will do no good,, or you can just hook up a higher power supply and i guess take your chances you wont fry yr mobo....
maybe im wrong,, but i'll wait a few weeks and see if AW makes any statments on their website before i sell....

FYI: I just spoke with a tech who has never even heard of the 6800 or 9800 cards...Jose Laraque was his name. He said he knew of no testing going on for the 6800. He also told me that I could upgrade to a 9700 but it is not being offered currently as an upgrade...well if that ain't a load of $hit...when I confronted him about the mobo revisions all he said was that he was unsure...I am not saying Time-Pilot that what your tech told you was a lie but when I heard so many conflicting stories from the same company then it is hard for me to believe anything they say...

I thnik i fyou are going to talk to a tech there you need to talk to some one who is familiar with the notebook line. If i was going to call to get good information. I would ask first off if I could be transfred to someone who was proficient with notebooks. Notebooks and desktops are two diferent worlds and it seems to me the desktop half has no idea what the notebook half is doing.

Sounds all good in theory, but we are talking about Alienware. Nobody knows what the hell is going on over there...if this was my first experience with them then you would be right but after almost a year of dealing with all their BS I have given up...nice thoughts for an ideal company Brain and also good find on the 9800mobility.

PS: Their product manager stated that the 9700 was the end of AGP and upgrades, but now there is the 6800go and 9800mobility? You mean to tell me that he had no idea about these future cards and that these cards magically went into R&D and production with only Dell knowing about the 9800...right...sounds more like they knew their upgradeable notebooks were no longer upgradeable after all these mobo revisions so they said hey let's pull all the ads about upgradeable graphics and tell them that there is no more upgradeable graphics and just continue to sell our new notebooks with the latest graphic cards...

The guy last night was pretty clear on the subject, after I started asking some pointed questions on mobo version numbers they bridged the mobile tech guy on. He statement on power supply wattage was pretty clear as well. this guy knew exactly what he was talking about.

It does not bother me any that I can only get the 5700, this is the last card I intend to buy before I get a new laptop. I would hate to have to pay for a new PS and possibly a new mobo just to get a better card for my aging laptop.

Whats bothering me now is that my order is still not listed on my personal support page, so I guess I need to call back in and check on it. Damn pahse game applies to everything I suppose.

I hope I am wrong and that what they told you Time-Pilot is true and that we will see the 6800go...all I have left is hope...

Time Pilot are you referring to a new motherboard? I guess you need a new power supply also?
I meant "video board" or card I suppose. But I see the point here, how can the original mobo handle a higher wattage power supply? I guess they would have to have a power inverter board internally that could step up and step down to match other supplies.

alittle more new info i guess

ATI Unveils Mobility Radeon 9800 on ExtremeTech
Quote:
This new mobile GPU moves mobile gaming forward by a sizeable leap, but also won't likely adorn many low-end or light laptops. Instead, look for it in the big, heavy-chassis gaming monsters from Dell, Alienware, and VoodooPC.

For the Mobility Radeon 9800, ATI is able to clock it up to 350MHz, which is well below its desktop counterpart which checks in at 520MHz. Low-k dielectric does help ATI boost clock here and stay within thermal envelope constraints, however, an eight-pipe part still draws too much power and produces too much heat for a laptop GPU to push very high clock speeds.

What we find is that the Mobility Radeon is about 60% faster in terms of the overall score than its predecessor. Again, going from one generation to another, this represents a tremendous performance gain. This biggest single-game gain was in Halo, where the 9800 was 88% faster than the 9700.

This GPU will be available in Dell's high-end Inspirion XPS gaming laptop. For current Inspirion XPS owners who want to upgrade, Dell will have a program in place where you can have your laptop upgraded for $399.

Mobility Radeon 9800 previewed

Imagine a laptop chip that can not actually fit in all notebooks, just in thick ones, but with almost double performance then before.

It's for "desknote" as the card is almost half the size of Radeon X800 generation of cards. You definitely cannot plug this into any thin and light or medium size notebook.

The firm said that this chip uses only a few watts at its best, up to 20W or 30W when you play 3D games.

There will be only a few design wins on this chip since one manufacturer is exclusively locked into this design and the M24 PCI Express core is just around the corner.

my thoughts on this is to start calling AW and hounding them about the 9800 upgrade,,, and when is it avalible for all of us mobo # 40** im really think that mobo number stuff is crapolaaaaaa,,, let the phone calls beginnnnnnnnn,,,,
now where;d i put that number to AW at again,,, oh darn,, the toilet....
HONEY DONT FLUSH YET!!!!!!!!
