Ordering Hypersonic CX5 soon

I could just use some last minute help on some configuration options.
  • 1.7GHz IntelĀ® Pentium-M 735 Processor w/ 2MB Cache (Dothan)

1.8 ghz isn't worth it for another $100 right?

  • 512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM SODIMM

My understanding is that the cl56 has 2 available slots for ram. I can purchase another 512 stick for cheaper at newegg right? Or is it too big of a hassle to install this stuff, and better to just let Hypersonic do it? Would they configure the comp differently during their testing if it had 1024 ram?

  • 60GB 5400rpm Ultra ATA Hard Drive

I've read some on the merits of 5400rpm vs 7200 rpm. The 7200 will have shorter boot up times and slightly shorter battery life for an extra $100. How significant is the difference between the two, and does it justify the $100 price tag?

  • 1Year 24/7 Toll-Free Tech Support Platinum Service & Lifetime Support

I can't see myself spending extra money on a warranty, but I'd like to hear some opinions on it anyways.

an extra 100mhz will not be noticeable in the slightest. In fact, benchmarks will hardly show the difference.
You can easily install an extra 512mb stick
If you access the HDD a lot, then consider the 7K60. for majority of the users, the 5400rpm is fine.

any other words of wisdom?

Having just bought a CL56, I'll give you my take.

The 1.7 GHz Dothan is the sweet spot for performance per $. For me, the 1.8 was too much of a price increase for 0.1 GHz. Since I bought my CL56 at MWave, it came with PC2100, so I bought my own RAM and installed it myself (it is extremely easy to do this on the CL56). So go ahead and find a good deal on another 512MB SODIMM. Also, I did not have the option to get a 7200RPM drive vs the 5400RPM, so I don't know if $100 for the difference is worth it. I also bought my laptop with a credit card that extends the warranty by one year for free, so this extends it to 2 years, which is not too bad.

Do not order from Hypersonic unless you want a delayed order. See my "CX5 Delayed" thread.

I don't really care if it is delayed. I don't need it until September, and I don't even really need it then. Starting school without a comp wouldn't be the end of the world - heck might go out a meet a few more people then.

I'm getting the 1.7 ghz and ordering an extra stick of 512 ram from newegg. I think I will go with just the 1 year warranty.

My final question is on the merits of the 5400 vs the 7200. Many people around here seem to have a 7200 (as their sigs' state). Are ya'll just made of money, or is it a worthwhile upgrade. Any first hand experience?

no experience
but I ordered my cx5 with 7200
correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe..
- 7200 is a bit faster if you need the speed, but it also uses a bit more power/battery
- a 5400 is sufficient, a 7200 if you can spare the money

Thats the same impression I got cynricc. I can afford the 7200, but if its a minimal upgrade in terms of performance (like 1.7 - 1.8) then I would really prefer to keep my $100. On the other hand, I don't want to regret getting a 5400 either.

I would say get it. Your discussing it alot right now so you might regret not getting it... and I would says Yes, it is worth the $100.
