Sager Future Upgrades Thread

I have been reading a lot about future technological advancements such as the pci express, and ati mobility 9800 appearing in the near future. It seems that sager tends to have the latest laptop technologies involved so i think it would be safe to assume that sager will feature upgrades with these improvements. I will be receiving a new laptop with the 9700 mobility. A strong card, but only has 4 pipes as opposed to the 9800's 8. I really would like to be able to upgrade to this card when its available. What is involved in the process of upgrading a sager model? the 5680-5690 upgrade cost 700, and i assumed it included a new motherboard, gpu, and upgraded chasis. Can this be done for the 4750? I will try to find answers to these questions by asking sager, but if any information is revealed please post it.

I have emailed sager regarding this and will post the response if it answers my questions.

I think it will depend on one thing Mayaman.. if Sager later comes out with a 4760 ...or whatever number they use to replace the 4750.. if so then you'll have a good chance of getting the upgraded motherboard..if however they go to a new designed Chasis..your probably out of luck.. Im with you again though..Clevo has never been behind.. Dell the new king of lappy's? ::snickers::

Like you said the 8790 has been out a good while..not a year though i dont think.. Anyone else know? I thought it was finally shipped in march..which supports my every 6-9 month a replacement unit comes out..

I had a good talk with Eurocom and they assure me their Phantom 900 is the new 8790..but since it wasn't out til Sept.I was more then free to order the 8790 which they do currently have instock.. yea right lol

yes i do. i think that is kind of unrelated. i am not insane, that's a legal term, but crazy. I will post them as soon as I get them. I just hope that the 9800 isn't dell only. I have not liked dell since they used that steve guy in the commercial.

I agree no company that values its self as a performance/enthusiast brand will let Dull beat them in their arena. I'm sure in the next month we will see many new laptops with this chip.

ATI isn't dumb they know everyone will want to get their mitts on this GPU so they will sell, and sell they will.

I just hope they have it in a centrino flavor. I'm not into the DTR type stuff.

Razor makes a good point..and I think the biggest factor we've all missed or haven't even thought about is this. Advertising..Dell is the king of it so while they are making a big splash about the 9800 card..Clevo will slip one in with maybe a couple weeks warning. Now only if we could get Adam to spill the dirt..I am willing to take a rumor from him at this point..even if he doesn't have the release date hehe..

It would be great if adam could answer some of these questions. if sager and adam don't give answers, i wonder if clevo will.

Thats a good idea Mayaman... Like I said the only source I've tried is Eurocom with them telling me the 8790 will be the 900x series...how reliable that is I dont know...It will be August soon..and if it won't be out by Sept 15th they should be changing their launce date soon... What about Uniwill..I haven't checked out their site yet..or Arima? Clevo doesn't seem to advertise like Dell...we seem to know when the resellers do... but its high time for that 9800 card atleast.. Good lord spare me..I just dont see Dell being the king of gamming laptops..even for a month..can you imagine all the hype and magazine reviews that will make that lappy seem like god? hehe.. nope..Sager/Clevo have to be up to something and soon..

i really don't want to have to buy a dell. i bet the pcmagazine will still hype the dell. but it is about time for the 9800 to arrive. and i'm sure voodoo will have something soon. they generally have the models available earlier, but with a hefty premium. although they would probably cost the same as eurocom (i don't know how they get away with charging those prices without a paint job!)

go-l probaly is more overpriced than eurocom
post #15 of 109
Some here in another post said even though Eruocom is a little overly eager..they are usually right on. Their release dates are not always true.. spec's are usually a bit off but they generally get them faster then other resellers because they have close ties with Clevo... We shall see.. luckily EQ2 was suppose to be released Sept but as been pushed back to Novemeber.. as long as I can hold onto the money without going on a shopping bieng.. (almost talked myself into putting 1000 bucks into my desktop and calling it a night) I will hold out til October..if nothing is out by then i'll be picking up the 8790..

Whats wrong with Steve.. I liked him.. I thought it sucked Dell canned him hehe.. speaking of which.. Dell will be releasing a 17'll in the oct/nov time period.. with that 9800 card it makes them look more attractive..but I can still get more for the money or atleast the same.. (if Sager releases the 9800 card) with Sager..

Go-I invents all there on stuff (yea right) someone bought a Clevo..think it was the 4780 from them..and I think it was either the tv tuner or vid cam that was a 100 plus upgrade option.. well the person choose not to get it..and low and behold he got it anyway because in truth it came standard with the unit..and was told something like he was recieving this upgraded options free.. ::rolls eyes::

I email Eurocom since they took the phantom off thier website and this is the responce I got, Hi,

The Phantom will be available but not anytime soon. We don't have a
model or know of a model that will offer the X600 Radeon or the Nvidia
N-41. The Phantom is still being tested and configured. The same goes
for the motherboard upgrade. I don't think they will have an upgradeable
motherboard for the 870K. As soon as I get any info on this issue I will
send you an update. Let me know if you need anything else.

What they mean by not anytime soon is anyones guess. That is why I am thinking of a 8790 now and upgrade it later, since they say the phantom is a 8790 replacement. Sager usally upgrades to thier furture models I hope they do with the 8790. :mad

I dunno, it seemed like his answer was always the same, and he was always in trouble. there were a few good commercials though. i think the one where he was hitting on the girls in the car was pretty good.

Big disappointment is that it looks like Dell will actually have an exclusive on the Mobility 9800, as I've seen it mentioned in several posts (like this one by bloke: http://notebookforums.com/showthread...748#post350748 ).

It kinda makes sense, though. It gives Dell an incredible short-term advantage, but it'll peter out in a few months when PCI-X is much more widely available. It wouldn't surprise me if Dell contracted ATI to make the 9800 specifically for them alone, as they're probably sitting on a few thousand iXPS/9100 chassis that they would never be able to get rid of when people can buy upgradeable PCI-X notebooks from other vendors.

If you wait a little while for PCI-Express, you'll be behind in terms of ultimate performance for a little while, but you can easily wait a generation of video cards then just upgrade to something significantly more powerful than the 9800 when it becomes available, when there is no upgrade path for the 9800 notebooks.

WZ, I dont know.. it looks simular to the 8790 but i think its got an updated Chasis. Eurocom always takes the Phantom down..and then puts it right back up.. So far they haven't changed the date.. I think Sept 15th is them being overly eager again. I think something will happen soon.. I just dont see Sager/Clevo being slow to Dell... As loyal as I am to Sager.. I would go for sheer power.. I want what is going to do more then just last me four years.. and that 9800 card rocks by leaps and bounds over whats current..
