Sager Future Upgrades Thread - Page 5

Agentsim its possible..but why change the 8790 chasis if all of this would fit already? The 8790 has a bigger Chasis..so that doesn't make much sense..

the 4750 chasis is very similar to the 8790, just an inch thinner, i'm sure clevo could easily just add an inch or more to accomadate the gpu. i just hope that clevo realizes that the water cooling solution would eliminate the need for a ~2" thick notebook. if they added that they could get a slimmer case and have the same if not better cooling.

I think we current Sager owners have nothing to worry about. The demand for a gaming notebook is huge and will drive lappy manufacturers and ATI & Nvidia to develop low power gpu's that perform even better than a X800 XT or 6800 Ultra. It will take a year or two, but it will happen. here's why:

a decade ago desktop cpu's kept drawing more and more power the faster they got. no one cared because their homes could handle a few more watts. then lappies came around and the demand for more efficient chips forced Intel to make lower power cpu's. today the power demands for laptop cpu's are less than 33% of desktop cpu's. All it took was demand for the technology. the same will occur with laptop gpu's, and the gap b/w deskie and lappy will be negligible

Thats true Orge but what has it to do with the current chasis?

Well, a Sager upgrade in a year or so could allow me to put a mobility 10k or w/e in there with a new PCI-E mobo

btw, your sig scares and confuses me

what about the 5690??

I have been reading the forums and researching the 5690 for the past couple of weeks and i had planned on buying the 5690 in late august/early september.

Everyone on this post has been talking about upgrading the 8790 or the 4750 models. Does anyone know if the 5690 will get the upgrade too. Is there any reason it wouldnt?

And do you really want to say "Dude, I got a dell!"?

This is rather interesting, from sager's development department.
here is the answer from our Engineering Dept. please check!
I hope this is a good answer for you!
Thanks,

In response to your question regarding the availability of the MR9800 in
Sager laptops, the short answer is the company is still evaluating
whether to use the MR9800 in its products.

With the introduction of the New PCI-Express form factor in 2003, Sager
has concentrated its design in that direction instead of video module
design based on the AGP Bus. As of now we are still on schedule with
our plans to release the first series of laptops based on PCI-Express by
the end of fourth quarter 2004. Also, the MR9800 is not exactly
pin-to-pin compatible and has increased power consumption demands over
previous versions. For those reasons, no final decision has been made
on offering the MR9800. As more information becomes available, we will
send out announcements to our licensed resellers

so it seems Sager in all its wisdom is going straight to PCI-E, o yeah, suck it Dell!
My guess is that Sager isn't going to let sales stagnate waiting for PCI-E if they can get a few months of sales out of the 9800 first. There are too many folks waiting for either the 9800 or PCI-E.

Sales will be lost to the first lappy with a 17" SXGA+ or 17" WUXGA and either the 9800 or PCI-E. Right now the only thing stopping me from getting the 8790 is I want the 9800.
I think Sager won't have to wait long at all. by the time the dell 9800 fiasco is over, Sager and others will have brand new PCI-E lappies of equal or greater power. They stand to lose more by going the 9800 route i think

If Dell continues to market the mobile gamer market as it has just started doing, my bet is they will continue to stay on at the forefront of the technology. They have the clout and the resources to do so as has been demonstrated. Basically Sager is saying Dell will have a higher performance video processor until the end of 2004. Probably Dell will have an upgrade by then as well. So who is sucking now? (Not that I'm against Sager, I'm not at all, but you have to give credit where credit is due. Dell HAS the best mobile gaming processor at the moment.)

I'm new to the forum, and it friggin' rocks!
I'm very close to getting the 4750 (waiting to see about the 9800). If i get it next month, will i be able to easily upgrade to pci-e when it comes out. That is, will i be able to send it back to sager/pctorque for an upgrade without purchasing a whole new system? also, any news about the expected 3790 system (i think that's the number for it)?
This site has helped me a -load. Thanks peoples.
