Looking at the 8790

Hello. I had a post in the Dell XPS forum that i was town between the XPS and the AW M-51 or whatever it was... dont really care any more .

Anyways. Now im down to the Dell XPS and the Sager 8790. The system i have there is around $3,400 which is about $400 less then the Dell.

Was just wondering if anyone had any comments on the Sager notebook, or any good/bad comparisons between the two companies. Only thing that i wish Sager had was the 4 year accedental damage coverage like Dell.

try configuring it at pctorque.com if u haven't already from what i've heard of sagars i think there great im getting a 4750 waiting for the tracking number right now

There is no Sager accidental damage coverage unless you can get it from another source. Both systems are good; however, you will have to make the final decision. My 8790 is rather nice and fits al of my requirements (and gives me a whole lot of "bragging rights").

You can fry eggs on the palm rests on the 8790, you can't do that with the XPS.

But, other than that, the 8790 is way cooler. Huge, great screen and RAID 0. And a much better looking notebook.

Actually, I tried that. You CAN NOT fry eggs; however, you can keep the coffee warm.

You may also want to consider that the Dell is 2" thick, and weighs nine pounds while the Sager is 1.7" thick and weighs 10.5 pounds. The Sager also has a bigger screen, better vid card, and better random stuff. Dell's don't exactly have the best build quality either... from my experiences the keyboard flexes and the screen has super flex.

Personally for me, the 8790 is that aboslutely clear choice... but you may not feel the same way.

You just said the Dell is 9 pound and the Sager is 10.5 but than you said Sager weighs less than the Dell?

Wow... umm... "me so stupide". Editing post.... Dell XPS looks bad though .

Im in a similar boat as Sieran. I am torn between the XPS, 8790/4750... With rumors of the 9800 GPU coming out I might wait, but then again, im not known to be a patient person.

Here is my dilemma. I know computers fairly well, but am in no means about to perform surgery on my lappy 1-2 years down the road. In other words, come time for upgrades down the line, I dont want some stupid warranty that sux. now im not talking ish about Sager warranty after the 1st year ( I forget what company it is after the 1 year) but, is there a reason for me not to?? As for the XPS, dell has set aside a few key techs that deal with the XPS, and the XPS ONLY! so im not gonna get some Costa Rica mambo jambo....

I keep checking this thread to see others opinions, but this is in a sager thread, far from unbiased opinions!!

Do you mean that Sager tech support is Costa Rican?!?! Just give a quick phone call or email to PC Torque and they'll be the best tech support there can be. Maybe they can direct the (Costa Rican?) computer techinican working on your computer .
I beleive i said, AFTER the 1st year is up. After the 1st year, you have to upgrade your warrenty, and its NOT through sager. Im worried about upgrades down the road a few years...I have bought 2 Sager through PCT and give them a hats off... i know their a great reseller. Im talking about AFTER the first year is up.. Stop speed-reading, and read the whole post foo, your killing me...
Deutch isn't Sager life time tech support?
okay, i will re-phrase wut i mean.

i plain to own this computer for 3 years. In a year or more, when i need upgrades, or have problems with the computer, i want good support. end of story.
As for Sagers life time tech support, i hear its really bad. i have never gone through Sager, and have only delt with PCT support, and thier great. From what i hear about sager tech support is your lucky if you get a call back. Read other post about sagers tech support. most users are unhappy with their "call back rating". Many others find any alternitive to calling Sagers "ill call ya back" tech support.
Im dealing with support right now as i post this and they are pretty quick to respond!!!! better than Dell and compaq both of wich ive had to deal with and took a day or two to respond by email.

I Just Hope Sager Sees the problem I am describing to them....

Seiran,

How about you post the specs of each system you are looking at as well as what you will be using your lappie for. That way we can give you some insight into what might be better on each and what might not be worth it on each. Also give prices please.

The accidental coverage on the Dell I heard is pretty awesome, but I've only heard that from one person. Since the Sager doesn't have that you may want to take that out of the Dell's price for a more fair comparison (doesn't mean you should take it out if you choose Dell). When selecting the warranty with Sager (and if you use PCTorque) go with the Phillips warranty...if you search some posts about the legal language in each I think you'll find that the Phillips warranty is worth the upgrade, your choice of course.

Grand total: $3,317

Any optional parts I don’t have listed means I didn’t select them.

Now for what I will be using the notebook for is a lot of things. One is for college. It will be nice to have something in class I can use to take notes on and actually be able to read what i typed.... unlike my hand writing . Also alot of my classes are in the computer field (Cisco, Linux, Oracle, etc...) and it would help a great deal for those classes. I also work as a security guard right now so i have a lot of free time at work and since all my classes are computer orientated i cant sit there with a pen an paper to do my work. So with a laptop I can kill two birds with one stone and get paid while doing my homework . Now I’m also looking for the laptop to handle heavy gaming. Things like Farcry, Planetside, and possibly D3 and HL2 and other future games. It would also be like a second computer at home.... only lots more portable. Also i go to LAN parties at least 2-3 times a year and carrying my heavy computer equipment up and down flights of stairs is killing me so a laptop would be a lot easier solution. For my current PC (AMD 2500+ XP @ 2gig, 1024 ram, R 9800 Pro 128meg, 19" VS FS Monitor) either Laptop is not far behind my current system... or maybe even faster.

Just a little shameless *bump*..... Not realy though.

I just had a few more questions. While looking at the 8790 and the TV tuner option. Where it lets you choose a battery (8 or 12 cell) along with a subwoofer or TV tuner & remote. Does that mean if i choose the 12 cell as the primary battery the notebook won't have a TV tuner? This is going off of the pctorque.com site.

One other question was about the internal bluetooth, is that recommended?
Dell just came out with the ATI 9800 256 Mb graphics for their lappys, if you wait longer maybe aug 20-23 or longer..... If your into games and such or have to have the latest then dell would be your thing. I love my Sager and think it looks way cooler than dell. Beautiful 17" WSXGA+ screen, full keyboard, and awesome support. With all that theyre not too shabby, but if your willing to wait about three months or less they probably might have a Sager version or PCI-Express version out soon.
