Does one need a DVD multi burner? - Page 2

nope, dual formet is +-, dual layer will prolly be DVD+R9 (from what i saw on newegg's specs for the NEC ND2510), and currently, i havent seen any dl burners with more than 2.4-4x duallayer burn speeds. of curse, that was just an 8x and 12x burner, so who knows?

Ok, that's why I wrote "in theory" I didn't say "+ and -", I said that DL format could be "+ _or_ -".

The NEC ND2510 is exactly the burner I'm thinking to buy for me (NEC=quality burners). Just because the NEC doesn't support DVD-R DL doesn't mean that this kind of media doesn't exist or would be created. Yet, I don't know if there is any plan from the DVD-RW guys (Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp) to release such disks.

Question to everyone: is there any "- DL" media already on the market? I only find +.

And that's why I told you about the time to burn. The speed for those discs is much more lower.

Portability is great, but ask yourself are you really going to be burning DVDs while mobile?

For most people portability is defined by weight, and the less you have to carry around the better.

You can get an external DVD burner that's twice as fast as the notebook version for less money.

I say just save the files (you bought the 60gb hdd, right?) and leave them to be burned at home while you're out getting a bite to eat in the mess hall.

Yes, I think that too. The question is: Do you have all that stuff to burn that can't wait until you get home? I mean, a DL disc support more than 8GB. Man! Some years ago this thing was an entire Hard Disc! For those guys who are always "on-the-go", however, maybe the internal should be the better choice anyway.....

also... if I'm buying a notebook, with an optical drive... why should I pay for both the drive in the notebook, and an external USB2 DVD dual layer... just get 'em both in the laptop.

Look: I found myself in a way that even if I put DVD-ROM/CDRW instead of a simple DVD+-RW (not DL), I save and with ~ $50 I can buy the DL NEC. I think the $50 is worth the DL capability (at least for my kind of use), although the dl media are so expensive, but this should improve with time.

If I could put just the DVD-ROM, I think I would do it. I would save even more.

also, my notebook will be my one and only system, seeing as how much it will cost and how 1337 it will be with the mr9800. seriously, though, since i won't make a hell of a lot of dvd's (quite a few, i assure you, but not a whole lot of them), would it really be worth it to get the dual layer burner, if only for the sake of "future-proofing" yourself against having to get a costly replacement when dual layer becomes very commonplace? lol, what an ass i must sound like now...

No, I mean, you're sure right about one thing: the future-proofing is not worth it everytime. If it was, I would have bought a DVDxR (No rw) burner when it came out, for a lot of $$$$. The question is not "if", but "when". I won't make a lot of DVD9 too, but probably more than you, for what you tell. I will make some "masterizing" (I don't know if it's the name in english). I plan to convert VHS-C to DVD, and if can put twice the video in one media, I would, and the people who wants this will be very pleased.

Hey everyone,

Just changing a little the subject: do you guys have any news about DL media double-sided? Imagine four DVD5 in just one?? Wow, my entire collection of CD-Rs personal files would fit ok on that. What's the name for that? DVD-16? DVD-17?

With that, I will skip the Blue-Ray technology and get the "super-duper-extra-violet-ray" ('cause the violet wavelength is shorter than the blue anyway...)

EDITED: the better part: it will be totally compatible with DL, since it's just another side.... It's 17Gb, right? I didn't mean if there is any, I mean the price of those discs. Did you see any on the Western Hemisphere?

Well this is a laptop for college. My college is very large and I found myself going to my friend's dorms alot to do work this past first year. Because of this usually when I leave my dorm it is for awhile and then I go to my library to do work. Again DVD burners are not that common and yes for many not necessary. The computers in my library don't have DVD burners so I was thinking what if? What if a friend needed it. What if "we" needed it for a project or something. Somehow in the future. However I the two companies/computers i was thinking about make allows me to swap out the Cd/rw drive i have now and switch it with something else so in the future i could buy one that is internal btu when the prices go down. Again the issue is portability and convenience. Thanks guys. Also i just thought another reason why i shoud wait is that the writing speed os 2.4 4x is sort of slow and I will be the first to have one a DVD burner but in a couple of years when they are more common i will have the slowest. Probably better to get the cd burner and call it a day. Ah well we'll see. won't be buying till january

Now isn't the time for DL IMO. ShrinkDVD does a great job of putting any movie on a SL disk and near DL quality, the DL drives are slow now and don't have +/- support, and the DL disks are much more expensive. Blank SL disks are less than US 25ยข, but DL disks are about a dollar each. Not worth the slight increase in video quality IMO. When the drives are faster and have +/- support the media drops to SL pricing levels I'll buy.

Can you get an external dual layer DVD writer? I am waiting for an HP 420e (NEC2500A in an external case), but could cancel the order.
Of course, but the same handicaps still exist. I'd wait for second or third generation DL burners and get the fastest internal SL burner that supports all formats (-/+/RAM) you can now.

Still too slow for DL disks. When they are 8X for +/- DL disks I'll bite.

marcog, i would say buy a regular internal ND-2510A and then stick that inside a 5.25" enclosure (newegg has one for $30), turns it into an external drive just much cheaper than a regular external-only.

get dvd x copy platinum w/ ripper

they are all over ebay and it works great for backing up movies.

Ferarri3200:

In that case I'd rather leave out DL. I don't want to replace my intenal one, it would cost too much.

Okle: I've always considered that, but was never happy with that solution. Maybe I'll look into it again. Does the ND-2510A support most media? Does it also support DL? And what speed?

That Memorex looks good! Only problem is that I'm in South Africa. It won't come out here till mid next year. I could get it from London through my aunt though. When will it be in the UK?

The article says it writes to DVD+RW, but doesn't say anything about DVD+R! Is this an error? And does it only read DVD-ROM, not write? I must say, it's very fast! Although we don't even get 8x DVD meadi an this country! So who knows when we will end up with 16x, in 2006 or later probably. That's the only problem with South Africa, we're behind in everything!

Where in London can I get the Memorex from?
