Adding a Third Hard Drive

Greetings all,

I have searched this topic to death, but I cannot find any info on this... Please advise.

It's time to add another HD to my 8890, so I want to remove my TV Tuner and put in an 80 gig 5400 in there in its stead. I am working with two 60 gig 7200's at Raid 0.

So, do I buy a bracket from PC Torque and look for a 2.5" 80 gig on Newegg.com? How do I get instructions on how to do the operation? (I know that Myrkat posted a how-to on adding a second drive.)

Thanks guys.

You could do that. You will; however, need the bracket. SOmeone posted instructions on adding the third drive late last year. Try searching for it. Also, it should be in the User manual.

Thanks G-Omaha,

I appreciate the response- I found some info in the manual, as you suggested.

I have searched these forums to death, and the only posts I could find were those where people were asking the same question as I, to be answered in by those suggesting another search (understandably).

I honestly couldn't find any posts with a how-to and/or pictures. I was just hoping to find someone posting who did it with success.

All the best,

I may be interested in this as well seeing as I have an NTSC tv-tuner and am moving back to England. So the TV tuner won't work there. I ordered a bracket from PCT and it was marked as a 3rd drive bracket, but fit in the modular bay.

Contacting Sager is your best bet. I think the 3rd drive bracket is different from the 2nd bay bracket.

There are basic instructions in the User Manual on Section 7-10, 7-14 and 7-15. The User Manual should be easy to find and download. The Service Manual has the best pictures on section 2-11. The Service Manual will be harder to find since Clevo blocked the ftp folder and now only resellers can get it. Some people have mirrored the Service Manual but you will have to do a search as I can't remember who.

[These are the 8880 Service Manuals (8886,8887) - the 8890 might have different section numbers)]

Rakewell,
The installation is fairly simple.
You will need to get the bay 3 bracket from PC Torque.
It comes with all screws and associated cables.

To install the disk unscrew the bay 3 cover, remove the TV tuner module.
You will need to mount the disk drive in the supplied bracket then attach the supplied flex cable. Note that you need to set the disk drive to CABLE SELECT. Check my 8890 review on how to do that.

I can give you more detailed instructions later on if you need them (disk orientation etc). Just repost to this thread.

Hey Aussie,

Thanks for the response, buddy- I appreciate it. I will head on over to your review to check it out. I will probably also re-post for further instruction help.

I need a 2.5 inch HD... any other specs I should know about? (ie brand, name, phylus, order, specie, etc.)

Incidently, where did you get your harddrive? Any suggestions on where to get a good deal on a 80 gig?

On a side note, can you believe it's been almost a year since the "8890 rush"? I still love mine, one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Cheers,

Try this one: http://www1.shopping.com/xPO-Toshiba...DMA100_5400rpm
It has a 16MB Buffer.

Make sure that when you get your order that you check the model number before you open it to insure that you got what you ordered - not what is on the invoice. Then after you install do the same thing with one of the utilities. I have had a lot of "bad luck" ordering the 2.5" drives and receiving "substitutions" that I neither wanted nor ordered and some vendors just don't give a damn about the differences. Just a word of caution (I might be the only one that this has happened to; however, my record is 2 bad shipments out of three this year for the Hdds).

Edit: These were three different companies and were not those listed in the link that I provided.

Oy.

That would really stink, I would be a little ticked if that happened to me!

Thanks for the headsup, I will pay close attention to the model number. I ordered mine from Mwave, I hope they don't try that on me!

What utility should I use to check on the drive after installation?

Cheers buddy,

You could use Sandra or any of the others that are out there.

I'll use Sandra... thanks.

I currently have two raided (0) 60 gig 7200's on my 8890... how would you compare the 80 gig 5400 with the 16 MB buffer to my new drive on the third bracket, speedwise? Should I keep my games installed on the 7200 flavor, rather than the new one?

Cheers,

A Single 5,400 Hdd will be substantially slower than the RAID-0 7,200 drives. For games this would mean that if placed on the 5,400's they will load slower and if you need to load backgrounds/scene changes in the middle of the games, these would also load slower. We are talking seconds here and not minutes. You might experiment with a few games and see if the performance is acceptable. I'ts really a personal "feel", that I can't answer. If you do "Photoshop", point the "buffered" files to the 3rd drive so they won't clash with those on the RAID drive - big speed consideration even if the drive is actually slower than the RAID.
