trying to order MR9800 from dell spare parts - Page 3

i think you're right you just need to take the lcd/cover off.....nothing else to the lcd
post #42 of 59
Yes, I took my 9700 out today to see how it goes. You need to take your LCD off to get your video card out, but you do not need to take any part of the LCD itself apart.

I use this order. (Unplug everything and remove the battery)

1. Close LCD-Unscrew the 4 screws (D screws I believe) under the notebook.
2. Open LCD-Remove the Hinge covers
3. Close LCD-Remove the top trim piece by prying up the back (dell manual tells how to this better than I can). Open LCD. Remove top trim and unplug the flat cable from the computer. Disconnect the two antenna cables and unplug the LCD grey cable from the Video card.
4. Remove two small keyboard screws. Lift up on keyboard to unpop it (dont break the keys). Unplug it from the motherboard.

Now you can get a good look at the inside of your 9100. You'll notice the wind tunnel (as I like to call it) on the right side and the video card under the keyboard support braceing.
5. Remove the two top screws and the two lower screws to remove the keyboard braceing (big metal like truss). Unplug the cables from the motherboard.
6. Now your videocard has 5 Torques screws on it. Don't remove these as they just hold on the heat sink. If you do want to remove it, I believe you're going to need a T-8 torques wrench, because my T-10 is too big. I'm gonna pick up a smaller one tommrow.

Look for the 4 phillips screws on the 4 corners of your videocard. Unscrew them and gently pull up on the card. The card and heatsink should lift straight up and off the motherboard easily. If not, double check to make sure you have all the screws removed.

The whole process takes me no more than 20 min. (Thank you dell for making such a nice notebook to disect! )

In regards to the 9800. Does anyone know if when you order it from Dell Spare Parts if it is shipped with the heatsink and transfer pipe allready assembled on the card or is that an extra part?

EDIT: Pictures are up :Images Here Sorry bout the crappy quality, but it was a 10 dollar camera. Probably 1/2 a megapixel.

So how exactly do you order the 9800 from Dell? I searched for the part number on the 'parts for your Dell' section of the Dell website with no luck....

I was told I could save myself the $399.00 install charge if I put the card in myself. So from what I understand Dell wants $399.00 for a tech to come to your house then $303.00 for the card. That is $702.00 for the 9800 card that is crazy!!

I will post the part number from my confirm email when I get into the office Monday.
ok, I believe you ordered something but seeing as I can not find the part anywhere on the web nor can anyone I've tried at Dell be of help, I'll ask you.

Who did you call? Where does this part exist in Dell's systems? How the heck can the rest of us order one too? There has to be someone at Dell who is aware this part exists and when they'll be offering it to us existing owners, doesn't there?

I could not find the part online so I had to call Dell direct.
Here is the email and phone number with the woman I dealt with. tracie_gonzales@dell.com
Phone: 18004563355 ext: 39312 Tell her that Lou from Gene's Auto sent you I told her I had a few friends that would be calling her.
A few of my friends just ordered there 9800's today.
I think the part is so new it is not on the website part list. I hope this is the new 9800 card I guess we shall see in the next few days.

You might want to cancel that order since it is for the desktop Radeon.

Have you opened a Dimension lately? It can take upwards of 30 seconds or more...well worth the charge I think.

Dude chill out I was not talking about Tracie. I was talking about the parts guy named Emanual that don't know his job.
I like Tracie she is doing a good job trying to get this straight. She has called me on my cell to keep me up on the status.

I think there is a pricing misconception here.

XPS owners acording to a Dell memo I read will get the Radeon 9800 256mb for an upgrade fee of $399 US including installation when upgrading from the 9700 128mb card.

The installation was part of the price difference between the i9100 and XPS, so you paid for it whether you upgrade or not.

That is what I thought it was as well? We keep getting a different story from Dell on what the price is suppose to be.

No problem it's all good. Unless you get your 9800 before I do. I am still waiting on our phone calls.
