When the upgrade becomes available I'm going to inquire if the price would be cheaper for a self install. They sent me my replacement 9700 and let me do the swap myself so I don't see why they wouldn't let me install the upgrade.

What's really got me thinking is the "starting at $399" line. That is scary!

i agree with ya geed. if you guys think about it, a top of the line, cutting edge desktop video card will run you 400-500 dollars. So i'm not surprised that a cutting edge laptop video card will be priced in the same price range, despite the fact that it's performance isn't as great as its desktop equivalent.

Think about it, a top of the line laptop is usually more expensive than a top of the line desktop, but usually the laptop is not as "powerful" as the desktop. Same for some of the individual components.

I will pay $400. Think about it. The upgrade is practically priceless because you cannot get it anywhere else; and it is the only option if you want to keep your laptop "state of the art". You will practically have a new laptop.

I am tring not to hyperventilate waiting for doom3. Just one more week...

We are lucky to have an upgrade path at all.

I think not. The desktop version of the MR 9800 is actually the X800, which retails around 500 bucks. The MR 9800 is twice as fast as the MR 9700

Well worth $400.

Will this go down in price at some point? I'm starting college in a month and money is going to be tight.

hahaha AW people are funny. Well for the first month, ATI will not be distributing these cards to other manufacturers so I guess that's a + for us considering we are willing to spit out 400 the next month for it

the mr 9800 may have the core of the x800 but in reality it performs closer to the 9800pro which can be found in the 250-300 price range

Alienware people are bitching at Alienware because they can't upgrade and Dell people are bitching at Dell cause they can. People are so silly.

Mobile technology is always going to be more expensive. Even if the MR9800 performs about the same as a 200$ 9800pro its going to be twice as expensive since its still based off the X800 Architecture. They gotta pay for that R&D somehow =) Anyway, the 9800pro was right at 400$ when it was first released.

Just look on ebay for a X800XT PE right now, due to VERY limited supply you can find auctions for over $1000.00. Its nuts right now.

Called my rep, and told her that I wanted to return my xps (only had it a couple of weeks) because I wanted to re-order with the new card, so she offered me a $600.00 credit to cover the cost of the upgrade. I guess that should cover it...... Hope it is available soon.

This may be why the price for the upgrade is $399 and up.

You know what...this type of stuff drives me nuts. Call back and get a huge credit! I called them 3 times during my initial period with problems on the laptop and all I got was a whopping $50 credit for my pain. Though I didn't ask for any type of credit and I'm typically very nice to them and saying that I'm not angry at them just want it fixed. Then I read about these people who get $200, $600 credits, free axims...what is going on!

Guess I'm just saying that I don't think it's fair that those of us who are not so inclined to push the envelope on the credit thing get looked over. Maybe next time I need to be pushier about getting compensation.

Hmmm...maybe I'll give them a call today and see if I can still get anything from them. So, I guess to those who aren't so lucky to get the credit or have the verbal skills to persuade Dell into giving you $600, you'd better get some balls so that you can haggle on the phone.

Just my thoughts...don't mean to offend anybody...just annoyed that all I got was $50. LOL! Need to take my own advice and become more forceful in my negotiations.

Thanks!

Hey people, how soon we forget... Does anyone remember back when the 9700 card came out for the IXPS (with the IXPS) and tons of people were complaining about lockups and screen freezes, I might have to wait a couple weeks and see some reviews on here and let dell get this baby perfected a little bit before throwing money back into dell's pocket...
Something to think about...
Jed

ofcourse that is "WHEN" they are available for upgrade

I just tried the same thing via e-mail, but for a 9100. Let's see if they call my bluff (I'm not really gonna send it back. Too much hassle).

They called my bluff.

They claim the AGP card is factory upgradable only, and I'll have to return and reorder.

try again with another dell rep, i would try it with 5 different reps. if they all sing the same song, then return it and reorder, well worth the 9800 card in my opinion

It's a friggin' 256MB video card people..$399.99 sounds like a steal compared to what Alienware charges for their video upgrade of a 128MB card!

lol i feel poor for the poor souls that bought into this whole marketing concepts. Not that they aren't at fault too.

I just placed an order for a completely new 9100 with the ATI9800. When it arrives, I'll swap it into my machine, and give the new 9100 to my grad student.

Guess I'll be the first to do the swapping.
