NEW Acer 1800 Aspire with PCI-e x600 ?

Thread Starter
I found this website in a different language, however I think I was able to pull out the following Specs about the Upcoming Acer Aspire 1800:

http://www.terminal.hu/newsread.php?id=22201407042116

3.0 GHz Pentium 4 - 800Mhz Front Side (Intel 915P)
512 MB - 333Mhz
80 GB - ATA100
17" WXGA LCD Display 1440 x 900
PCI Express with ATI Radeon x600 X16 - 64MB DDR VRAM
DVD - Super Multi-Drive
IEEE 802.11g
XP Home
5-1 Multimedia Card Slot (MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital, SmartMedia, xD-
Picture Card, Memory Stick)
4.5 Kilograms (9.9 Pounds) ???

Anyone else read bewtween the lines too?

Yes... But unless it weights > 30 lbs, the battery life would be, what? 30 minutes? (Is this weight with or without the battery?).

But, everyone must say it: it's a good improvement for gamers...

And I hope the price of _other_ computers goes down before I buy mine.

The Aspire 1800 is now out, check the specs on Acer.co.uk! Not great but PCI and the X600.

Exactly, that card is way slower then a Mobile 9700.

X600 series = 9600pro

Isn't it supposed to be user upgradeable?

It doesn't specify whether they are using Ati's AXIOM interface or not. I think user-upgradeable PCI-E graphics cards will depend on whether they have a standardized size, power and cooling requirements. Otherwise they may still be designed to fit each individual notebook, unless the manufacturer uses AXIOM or Nvidia MXM modules.

Way slower? You do realize, that they're using the same core, just using a different interface, right? Same low-k manufacturing process for higher speeds compared to a Mobility 9600, which is also the same core.

The 64mb video memory on it does suck, however.

I think the average specs (512 RAM, 64mb GPU, 60GB HD) are to make this affordable to most people as it is currently the only PCIe notebook. And the beauty of the specs is that when it gets older in a year or so you will be able to upgrade that x600 to a 256mb GPU the RAM to 2GB and the HD to 100GB 7200rpm

I still think ppt are overestimating the upgradability of PCI-E in laptops. WAY too many factors to consider when upgrading vid cards.

Technicly it is a faster bus, but the performance gain is less than 1% from bus speed increase.

I think you're right. With AXIOM, it's still left up to each ODM to decide what shape/size to make the graphics card. So it's not like you can go to your favorite computer shop and pick up a new graphics card from a graphics card company and replace it. It will still have to come from the ODM (or a reseller) and be made for that notebook.

The way I understand it, MXM is a bit different. It has 3 set sizes for different types of notebooks, and those would be interchangeable between notebooks. I could be wrong, but that's how I understood it.

I wish the standards people would get off their butts and get a standard in place for notebooks, so we could just get the cards from graphics card companies like we do with desktops. I think a good many ODMs would adopt a standard like that, personally.
