Any good free audio recording software out there?

I'm trying to use my notebook for mic in recording, but Musicmatch won't let me unless I register and pay. My notebook didn't come with any audio editing software. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Do you want to do write music, or do you just want to rip CD's?
If you want to write music, you can go out and buy a copy of Computer Music. It's a british music magazine that comes with a whole suite of free full featured music making programs. Sequencer, sampler, synth, drum machine, FX. It's a good deal considering you'll probably pay 15.00 for the mag.
If you want to rip CD's and convert them to MP3's try these two links

Well, I play violin, so I wanted to use my notebook to make a high quality recording of myself for practice purposes. Amazing all the little things you pick up that way. Kind of like recording your own voice and being really surprised at how you sound. I'm not really interested in actually creating music. Thanks for your suggestion though, pranaearth.

If you search around on hitsquad.com, they have tons of categories of music software. Look around there, they have a category for recording as well.
Good luck.

p.s. I used to hate it when my Oboe teacher recorded me, so I feel your pain, lol

You could use Windows Media Encoder 9. It has a ton of options for recording with either a built in mic or external. You could even make the file streamable so if you wanted it on a website you could have it stream to friends to listen also.

windows media player has built in WMA encoding, its not THAT bad of a format, it works, and the filesize/quality its not too big either
