9800 Mobility Radeon

Thread Starter
I went to ati's site www.ati.com and checked out their mobile cards and it looks like they have a new one, 9800. I recently bought a laptop thinking I had the most up to date card, the mobility 9700, at least for a laptop that ATI made. I checked round on the net and their are no laptops with this card in it yet. What does this mean? Also, I've been reading that Nvidia's mobile card is a better bet for playing doom but that once ati changes the drivers it won't matter. What does that mean?

Check out the other post with the mobile 9800.
And you haven't seen it around because it's a Dell exclusive. sucks i know.

I doubt it will be a Dell exclusive for long. ATI would be shooting themselves in the foot.

The ad was also German, so things might be different here in the states (here's to hoping).

Try a month-long exclusive. This info isn't based on that ad, it's based on the numerous reviews/previews/announcements on the net as of today.

Oh well. September isn't that long of a wait.

I'm still hoping that Compal decides to make a 9800 card.

Where are you going to get the extra 20W the 9800 requires (above the 9700)?

Yes, I'm seeing that now. I'm slow reading the news today. The wattage figures weren't on ATI's website either. I'd hope that my laptop could support it.

Definitely a beast of a thing, so it probably wouldn't fit in my laptop anyway.

I think the exclusiveness is mentioned on dell. but that should be taken with a grain of salt. however i wonder if its on ati site. they just announced the release of the 9800 mobility also the x300, x600, x800 were mentioned.

Xbitlabs also mentioned a Mobility Radeon 9500 that I guess will be a castrated version. How so, I don't know.

the Radeon 9800 appears on the Dell America site now.

Any idea when this thing will be available for CL56 or simillar?

9500 wouldn't be a lower version of 9800.. that'd be pointless considering it'll be better than the 9600 and 9700 =)

I'm guessing the 9500 might be the new low-end card, maybe a successor to the 9200.

the 9800m will stay exclusive to Dell for 4weeks after its relese, i bet its around the late 2nd going into 3rd, so hold out a couple more days and it should come

if the 9500 is anything like the desktop card, which i have, it will kick some serious ass. its much better than the 9600 because it has 8 pipes as opposed to the 9600's 4 pipes.

Depends on which flavor of the 9500 you're talking about.

The 9500 Pro had all 8 pipes enabled, just had a 128 bit memory bus and slower memory than the 9700.

The 9500 had 4 pipelines and 128 bit bus. However, if you got one of the "red" PCB's, it was possible to hack it in to a 9700 as the other 4 pipes were enabled as well as the rest of the memory. It had about a 60% success rate as some 9500's were rejected for a reason. Others got the bonus.

Dell's only charging $179 more for the video card. I think it'd be worth it in this case.

that's why i can't settle for anything less than dtr. my old 9500 is still more powerful than a 9700 unless, the latter is clocked really high. i love the 9500 pro 200 and seems to handle every game rather easily.
