hypersonic or alienware

i am torn between these two. for the next few years at least, i will be working in antarctica during the austral winter(february till october) for the next few years. so i would be unable to deal with hardware problems if they arise, would have to wait for repairs. i would get the maximum warranty and expect good support, i hate talking to burger flippers about computer problems. i think both laptops are attractive and look solid. i have read many reviews about the alienware and in all fairness think that it would be a good choice. same thing for the hypersonic, are there any horror stories about hs that i am missing? i am currently leaning towards the 17" screen and no paint job on the aviator gx7 3.4 non extreme, 1 gig...blah, blah, blah and the area 51m 15" inch, 3.4, 1 gig.
uh, gotta go for lunch....its the small pleasures down here

Hold up. Don't go Alienware. I highly advise you to check out Sager. Sager = Alienware + Quality + Tech Support - Price.

Their site is: Sager
The best reseller is: PC Torque
And the Sager forum: Sager General

Check out the 5690, 8790, and 4750. Those are all better than the Alienware, and cheaper. And the tech support from PCT is superior. One of those will most definantly fit your needs.

As for the Hypersonic... there good, if you REALLY dislike Sager go for them... but you should definantly go Sager!

i dont have any thing against sager but the reviews i have seen dont hold up with the whole great support and quality thing. i am sure that many people are happy with them, after looking at resellerratings reviews and here i am more impressed with hypersonic.

I have bought my last 3 desktops from Hypersonic and have been very pleased. Their tech support (if you call during their business hours) is excelent and very very quick to pick up. As with most companies they outsource their after hours tech support, and they do a very good job also, but they work on call backs.

I have just recently ordered a notebook from HPC, when my 6yr old compaq died, and I have no doubt that the quality will be exceptional.

I also didnt like that aw charged $30 extra for the recovery discs. And they didnt have the 256mb ati.

That is why PC Torque is there they're giving great service from what I read.

As in terms of quality, I'd say its a toss up between Alienware and Hypersonic. Your notebook may arrive at your door in perfect condition or you can have problems from the get go. It happens.

If you want the more advanced technology (like dual channel RAM and an ATI 9700 256MB), I'd go Hypersonic. If you want the design and looks, go Alienware.

Alienware seems to be in limbo right now with their upgradeable graphics. I for one am hoping that the Radeon 9800 comes out as an upgrade which would mean the last tier before PCI-Express. If you decide on Alienware, I'd wait to see what their next step is.

good point about the graphics card. also hyper has the 256 card right now. sorry that it took so long for me to post again, a wind storm blew our dish over and some folks had to make a traverse to black island to fix it.....2 days without internet or phones, i thought i was going to start convulsing.

But alienware design on the case is soooooo nice!

I will say that there is a growing number of happy Hypersonic customers. Sure, there are those who got a bum deal, but I think any of the customers for any product is that way. And if you are going to look at the Sagers, I would say that PCT is the way to go, as they seem to pick up the missing pieces that Sager leaves. I have been impressed with what I have read about their customer service.

Good luck in your choice.

P.S. -> I am extremely happy with my GX7 and would not trade it for anything. I am satisfied enough that in two years (seems to be my life-cycle of laptops), I will be looking toward them again.

Darthmorgoth,

Although I cant speak from personal experience yet, I would suggest waiting at least 6 months if you can before ordering from alienware. They seem to be undergoing major transitions as far as their mobile line. There is quite a bit of controversy circling their "Upgradeability" claims, and there are enough horror stories to counterbalance any positive ones.

That being said, if you don't want to wait 6 months (like me)... alienware is a good deal for the money... sort of. If you can stand shelling out enough money for a hypersonic or alienware, you cant really go wrong. Either way you might have to depot it right after arrival, or have long build times. Your biggest cues should come from existing customers and their stories.

I just see no reason to get an Alienware over a Sager. The ONLY pro for Alienware is the looks. And I guess the upgradeable graphics but who knows how the 9800 is going to work with it. Sager is cheaper, has better components, and has better tech support (from what I have heard). I mean PC Torque for the tech support . Hypersonic's are great machines, so you I believe you should change you question to Sager vs. Hypersonic .

Hypersonic > Sager > Alienware
Alienware= overpriced nice looking and fairly good customer service.
sager= good price, excellent tech support (from what i hear the best cames from pctourque), the best hardware and the ability for custom paint jobs.

darthmorgoth, a fellow OAE'er. I was on the ice during the '93-'94 summer season, spent most of my time aboard an ice breaker doing seismic research but also spent time at McMurdo. It was an AWESOME experience. Gotta love it to "winter-over" though!!!!
Now... my vote goes to Hypersonic. They are a great company, a bit slow with the build but my PC arrived working flawlessly and without any dead pixels. I cannot comment on their support but have heard from others that it is quite good. They have always been responsive when I called with questions during my build. I have no complaints so far!!

P.S. Is Southern Exposure still open down there?

hey superfrappe, what happened with the gx7? replaced already?

i myself have heard nothing but bad news about alienware, and imo they look like sh**. sager is cheap, but if you want it painted i would go to hypersonic.

hello asus,
yeah southern is still open, its the smoking bar now. im not sure what year that happened but it was dingy until we painted it last month. i have been here since october 03 and its a great community. we are gearing up for winfly right now... checking out the passenger deltas and moving into our new rooms. my wife and i dont have enough points to stay in the big dorms. we both work in supply, im in central and she is in 136.

i am going with hypersonic at this point, i think alienware has some evolving to do and i dont like what i hear about sager....just a personal choice, im sure they are wise choice too.

so check out travelpod.com and look under antarctica, i think there are only three antarctica ones...look for velvet and ron

They always says once you visit Antarctica you either love it or hate it! I loved it, sounds like you do as well... I am checking out travelpod.com now. I am out of town on a dialup (painfully slow) so I may have to wait until I return home to read you guys postings there. Maybe I'll drop you a line from time to time to see how things are going down there.. BTW, you will "love" New Zealand on your return.. stay as long as you can....
P.S. Enjoy your Hypersonic once you decide to get it!! Almost forgot this is a computer forum!

Hmm on the Hypersonic CX5 (which is the Compal CL56) w/o any custom paintjob, exact same configuration compared to Velocity Micro, Hypersonic is a few hundreds more expensive. Why is that?

What don't you like that you hear about Sager? Please enlighten us...

The only thing I can think of that may turn people off is it is not well known, and they may get a little warm, but that is to be expected in all high-powered comps.

But, I'm glad you chose Hypersonic and not Alienware ! Have fun with your new lappy and don't forget to write up a review when you get it .
