e-Machine Admits Faulty Parts as Cause Of Hinge Problems

I just got off the phone with e-Machines tech support. They said they had a batch of bad hinges which were used on the m6805, m6810 and M6811 (not m6809, Hmmm). They can identify the affected machines by serial number and manufacture date. They are waiting for the new, fault free hinges to get to their laptop repair facility, then they will start repairing the faulty laptops. The laptops will have to be sent in to be repaired.

They will not contact the owners of the affected laptops. They are waiting to be contacted.

I wonder whether they will repair the ones that they can't identify as being affected through serial number now

What? Seriously? There were faulty parts in those eMachines??

Actually, I think eMachines is taking the best action and approach in handling the situation. Contacting all the owners with a faulty laptop hinge would be a daunting task, and unlike automotive recalls, a cracked hinge never caused a laptop to burst into flame.

I would hope they would fix any of their laptops with a cracked hinge. I know of M6809 owners who have mentioned that their hinges have cracked.

After the starti *fixing* the broken hinges, we will see if they stay fixed!

At least they are saying they will use better parts for the fix!

I am curious, though. Is there a way for new owners of the laptop to identify whether or not they have a faulty hinge before they actually have a crack? I would think eMachines would welcome saving some money by replacing the hinge without having to replace the case piece as well. Plus, a friend of mine is buying an M6810 soon, and I'd like to be able to tell her for sure whether she'll have to send it back, or not.

I would suggest calling from the store before finalizing the sale.

kudos to emachines for coming clean with a problem with their machine, wish all other companies acted in the same manner (not naming any names)

however, since the emachines are also sold via retail outlets (or are they?), how will they ever be able to contact individual purchasers when they don't know who they are?

They are not calling individual users. They are waiting for the user's to contact them with the problem. If the crack doesn't appear, there is no problem, at least in e-machines eyes!

Excellent news! Even though some m6809 users have reported cracked hinges, the ommission of m6809 from their list does in some way help me feel better about my chances of staying crack free

Yeah, and staying crack free is the way to be.

Any chance they'll post the serial numbers / dates on their website? Or at least make them available for posting here?

(m6805 crack free -- and hoping to learn it will stay that way.)

They are probably hoping not too many people will call! If they posted the numbers, those with laptops affected, but without cracks, would send their laptops in alos, slowing the repairs of those with cracks.

Yeah, although you want to paranoid in this situation, you should probably stick with the good 'ole saying...

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

No 6809, get REAL!

What a bunch of &^%$&^. I have the 6809 and both hinges are cracked just like the ones I saw on the 6811 at Best Buy yesterday. I still have my RMA box and am sending it in. They cannot ignore it, same as the rest of them. Send it back as is and say I am not included they will be picking my lawyer out of their &*^%$&*%.

Wow, I just read this on another forum....

"[size=7]Guys, I'm not only new to this forum but I also bring bad news. Tech support told me that any serial numbers on any 68xx emachine notebooks ending in a number smaller than 4400 would not be repaired if the hinges cracked. Luckily I just bought mine Sunday at Best Buy and will be able to return it. I'll have to eat the 15% restocking fee though I guess you pays your money and you takes your chances. I don't see how mine could be a # lower than 4400 when it's a brand new 6811. I also had a hard drive that growled and only showed 74 gig capacity so it's screwed up too. I hope that all that read this will head my warning and not buy emachine unless serial # is a hit. I don't want anyone to be as disappointed as me. I'm a bedridden invalid who's only window to the world is my computer. I just can't believe that they run their company like this. I think Gateway must be making some early changes in their policies.
Goodluck guys,
drphilngood "

Any comments as to the validity of this?

The capacity on the hdd is 74 gigs for resource and data info. This happens to all drives. Especailly after you load windows....this guy needs help. If he has cracked hinges, they will repair it. I just got off the phone with them. Trust me. He is an idiot for paying a 15% restocking fee for no reason....That is how Best Buy stays in Business....

I have a brand new m6811 with a SN ending in 10312 as the last 5 digits. I started this thread and I know I am covered because the Tech at eMachines checked and told me I was. Use the last 5 digits not 4. I would guess serial numbers with the last five digits smaller than 04400 might not be covered, if that is true.
