Wide screen LCD's and Gaming

Are there any disadvantages to purchasing a widescreen LCD for gaming?
with the new games can you select an option for widescreen or not? (like DVD movies)

Do you get the black borders like the laptop wide screens? (shortening the picture size)?

Finally, if you have a choice would you get a 20"+ LCD widescreen or 4:3 display?

thanks,

CuJo

There aren't any manufacturers that make widescreen displays, unless you go with a widescreen LCD TV, such as the ones Dell offers. However, the resolution on these will be significantly worse than a WSXGA or WUXGA screen on a laptop.

As for the games, most new games, such as Steam (CS) and FarCry have options for widesceen resolutions. Keep in mind though that the widescreen resolutions are for laptop displays that are not truely widescreen; laptop widescreens are 16:10, not a true 16:9.

Thanks.

Certainly looks pretty. Have you seen it in person? Another issue might be color depth, I dunno. But man, I want one...

I've seen it - in a box only.. waiting for a review to come out from Tomshardware.com first before purchasing it. (they seem to write good reviews & make a point of mentioning whether it's best for office work or graphics work/gaming..

If it's a go - I'll buy one in Sept/Oct timeframe (hope prices dip abit because of the fall..)

Hey Wooster, the link worked fine for me? Anywho, I would get the widescreen cojo, as for games i havn't had it put black bars on the sides at all. I have also changed my screen resolution and it only buts black bars on the sides at 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1792x1344, 1800x1440, 1856x1392, and 1920x1080. You wouldn't normally run any games at any of these resolutions so I don't think that you will have a problem with it since my res(1920x1200) is the same as the LCD you are considering.

Sony seems to have a decent LCD screen with XBRITE technology. But I will want to wait for a seereal's monitor. Check out www.seereal.com. It'll be a first 3D monitor, it also supports gaming with NVIDIA cards, possibly ATI, too.
