Intel or Dell Wirless

Thread Starter
If I went for the 2200 or the 1450 is there an advantage to go with the dell (otehr than the a rating)

thanks!
I have the 1350 and absolutely love it, not sure what the differences are between it and the Intel so sorry I'm not going to be of much help.
using the Intel card gives you the "Centreno" certification, otherwise you'd just have a Pentium M system.
dells wireless cards are cheaper, and have better range....but u dont get the centrino sticker...
My Dell has a TrueMobile 1350 and it has the Centrino sticker.

Evo, how is Dell's internal wireless card cheaper? On the Canadian Dell Website, it costs $99 to upgrade from the Intel ProWireless 2100 to the Dell Internal Wireless 1350. Is this a mis-print? Or is it that Dell is ripping off Canadian customers?

It appears that Dell's Internal Wireless is $99 more than Intel's.

mojo: wierd, on dell us, the dell wireless is usually $10 less (right now its $10 more b/c they have $20 off intels). $99...thats a crazy price difference.

ttk: im jealous...u got lucky. +40hp for your comp
post #8 of 27
he's also comparing the dell 1350 the intel 2100 pro, not the 2200 pro

hence the 100 dollar price difference

but dell canada rapes you anyways (unless you call in and haggle)

is that at the wheels or the crank?

Ok here are the options I'm seeing at Dell home US. Can anyone can tell me the difference between them and if upgrading is worth the $$$?

Dell® Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps) [add $10]
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mb [add $20]
Dell® Wireless 1450 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps) [add $30]

thanks

I recomend this. (wireless b=11mb/s, g=54mb/s) - Dell® Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps) [add $10]

This is the same as the 1350, but worse range + more money Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mb [add $20]

This is like the 1350, and it has wireless a, which is 5ghz, instead of a+b's 2.4ghz (so farther range). However, since practically no where has wireless a routers, i dont recomend this. Unless you have one at your house. Dell® Wireless 1450 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps) [add $30]

evo you had a lot going on in that post. I followed but not sure everyone else will.

In short: The Dell 1350 and Intel 2200 are basically the same thing. The Intel costs Dell a couple bucks more and is part of the whole "Centrino" shananagans, hence the increase. With the Dell 1450 your paying for the tri-mode(a/b/g) card, which evo was correct about, you'll most likely never run into an 'a' network.
At home I use the Dell 1450 for its 802.11a (5 GHz) because more than one of my neighbors has 2.4 GHz phones and I want clear data channels.
Oh wait! It doesn't have a Centrino sticker, just a Pentium M sticker, plus, it doesn't have to be Intel to be Centrino, it just has to be approved by Intel.

Axiom: thanks for the clarification. lol, i got confused myself when i re-read it.

ttk: -40hp for you.
you keep subtracting hp, can't he gain it back by welding some cosmetic scoops all over the body? I heard this in combination with a 150 shot of N2O can really reduce quarter times.
haha, yes, or make your car explode... either way works for me
post #17 of 27
the intel 2200 also uses a bit more power than the dell 1350... read the specifications.

I believe they are called "speed holes" if you wanna get technical.... BTW I just discovered www.laughatrice.com. Funniest sh1t. HAHA.

But back to wireless: I use it constantly. I've got a router at home, and I'll be using it all over my University when I go back in the fall, not to mention my little hotspot-finding habit.... So I should probably get the pimpest one they offer huh. It's only +$30, so i think i'm gonna get it.
cant hurt to get the best, but i doubt you'll ever see a wireless "a", unless you get a wireless "a" router yourself.

Evo! take me for a ride in your car. Pleeeeeeez?

Sigh, sorry. I just couldn't hold out any longer.
