ad hoc wireless connection speed?

Is a 11 Mbps connection speed for an ad hoc wireless connection standard? I'm connecting to a coworker's laptop, and we both have 802.11 b/g cards, yet it's going at b speeds rather than g speeds. Is this the norm, or is there something we're missing?

Depends if you're running in mixed mode or G-Only mode. Sounds like you're running in mixed mode.

I'm not sure abuot ad-hoc, but normal g connections are about 20mbit at normal ranges.

We're sitting not 10 feet away from each other. Intel PROSet tells me we have a very good connection, 11 Mbps, 802.11g. Why so slow?
