WIFI- 802.11g Turbo, will it work with my Gigabyte 108Mbps card in turbo mode?

Keep in mind, this information was obtained from a tech-support call.

Netgear Support Call-

Source: 1-888-NETGEAR
Case #835291

I called Netgear to confirm whether or not the Gigabyte 802.11g Turbo card will work in the turbo mode (108 Mbps) for their routers (in my case the Netgear FWAG114).

According to my research, the Gigabyte 802.11g Turbo Plus card uses a standard known as "Super G" which is also incorporated by Netgear and several other well known brands. This is an enhanced 802.11a standard which will ONLY work with other Enhanced 802.11a devices.

Why this is called "Super G?"
I don't know. Perhaps it's the G standard with the A enhancement.

According to the tech-support of Netgear as well as the FAQ website for the Netgear router shown below. All products that have the "108Mbps" logo on the box should be compatible and operate in "Turbo" mode.

Personally, if you want 100% assurance with compatability, buy a Gigabyte WIFI router that supports 108Mbps.

I hope this information can clear up a few questions.

For what it's worth, the tech you spoke to had no clue what he was talking about.

The 802.11g standard is not based on 802.11a in the slightest. They are entirely different standards. Both B and G use frequencies in the 2.4GHz range, while A uses the 5GHz range.

Super G basically uses a pair of 2.4GHz G channels (hence, "Super G"). 11G gives up to 54Mb/s bandwidth. Therefore 2 channels gives 2 x 54 = 108Mb/s bandwith.

Any networking card wanting to run Super G these days is going to use the Atheron chipset. However, when the standard was initially announced, there were several competing (and therefore incompatable) chipsets. Therefore, older Super G cards may not be entirely compatable.

Hope this clears things up.
